Why UTRGV?
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley offered me something that no other university could, the opportunity of being close to home while obtaining a high quality education. Being close to my family has always been very important for me, which is why it was very significant for me to stay in my hometown. Being able to interact with my professors and to have one-on-one relationships with them was essential in order to improve my education. Knowing that the professors are always around to help students succeed made it a smooth transition from high school.
What made you decide on your current major?
Working for the City of Brownsville as a swimming pool supervisor made me realize that business management is what I am truly passionate about. Managing a 15-member staff of lifeguards, planning events and schedules, finding ways to improve the workplace, and attracting the community to use the facilities were some of my tasks as a supervisor, which made me decide business management is what I wanted to major in.
What are your plans after graduation?
After graduation, I plan to get a job in Texas as a manager or director to get more experience. After some years, I would like to start working on my master’s degree in business administration.
What are you involved in on and off campus?
I am currently working as a student office assistant for the Housing and Residence Life Department in Casa Bella. I am also an active member of the Residence Halls Association. Since the summer of 2010, I have worked for the City of Brownsville Aquatics Department as a lifeguard and swimming pool supervisor.
What is your biggest accomplishment to date?
My biggest accomplishment is being on UTRGV’s President’s List since my first semester in college while also working as a student office assistant for the Housing and Residence Life Department at UTRGV.
What advice do you have for future students?
The best advice I could give to all future students would be to use their time wisely, not procrastinate, and attend class even if it’s not mandatory. A key component to succeed in college is to be involved in different activities and organizations that the university offers. This will help you meet new people and build relationships that could help you in the future.
