Why UTRGV?

UTRGV was an obvious choice for me. It’s so close to home that I was practically raised here, coming to campus with my grandfather, Dr. John P. Abraham, a professor in the College of Engineering and Computer Science, so often as a child. He retired last fall, having worked at the institution since 1976, and a circular plaza on the UTRGV campus was dedicated to him because of his commitment to the university. His hard work has helped me feel better equipped to handle college life.

Why UTRGV?

I chose UTRGV for several reasons. One of the biggest reasons is that UTRGV celebrates cultural diversity, with a student body that represents a wide range of backgrounds, including Mexico and Latin America. As a Mexican student, this was a major attraction for me. Additionally, UTRGV has excellent professors from different countries around the world, providing a wide range of experiences, perspectives, and knowledge that create an amazing learning environment. UTRGV also has strong connections with businesses, healthcare organizations, and government agencies, especially in the Rio Grande Valley. These connections provide valuable internships and job opportunities that make the transition from academics to professional success much smoother.

UTRGV is a university made up of many hardworking individuals who strive for a better future. That is why I knew it was the right place for me. What I have learned about UTRGV, and its people, is that they are always willing to lend a helping hand when you need it most. The community in the RGV is one of the most welcoming you'll encounter, and it's hard to find this kind of warmth elsewhere. Not only that, but the education at UTRGV is among the best in Texas. Combining these two factors makes it difficult for other universities to compete.

I chose UTRGV primarily because of its proximity to home. While I aspire to move away for my career after graduation, I wanted more time in the Valley to strengthen my connections to my community and culture. UTRGV has provided that and so much more. Why UTRGV?

UTRGV has been a part of my family's legacy since the UTPA days. Two of my uncles pursued their degrees here—one earning a bachelor's in manufacturing engineering and the other a master's in computer science. I practically grew up knowing the Edinburg campus. As a child, I remember visiting my uncles at their apartment or my grandparents, and they would take me around campus, showing me the facilities. They would always say, "These will be the hallways you walk through in the future," and from that moment, I felt at home. Since then, UTRGV has provided me with a supportive environment, a pathway to success, a sense of family, and memories I knew I couldn’t find anywhere else.

I chose UTRGV for a couple of reasons: one being that it is local to my hometown. Another is that, although many feel colleges are large and have many students, I strongly believe UTRGV’s faculty-to-student ratio is perfect. Being able to speak to a professor not only about class work but also about future and current opportunities, along with discussing the next steps in life—allows a student to realize they’ve chosen the right school. In addition, the clubs all around the university, not just those affiliated with UTRGV, are very welcoming, making students feel at home and assuring them they aren’t going through college alone.
