Why UTRGV?
I chose UTRGV for several reasons. One of the biggest reasons is that UTRGV celebrates cultural diversity, with a student body that represents a wide range of backgrounds, including Mexico and Latin America. As a Mexican student, this was a major attraction for me. Additionally, UTRGV has excellent professors from different countries around the world, providing a wide range of experiences, perspectives, and knowledge that create an amazing learning environment. UTRGV also has strong connections with businesses, healthcare organizations, and government agencies, especially in the Rio Grande Valley. These connections provide valuable internships and job opportunities that make the transition from academics to professional success much smoother.

What made you decide on your current major?
My name is Erika Gisela Mejia de la Garza. I studied dentistry 20 years ago and earned a master’s in Periodontics 16 years ago, both in Mexico. Throughout my career, I’ve been committed to providing the highest level of care to my patients. I’ve always felt deeply passionate about my profession, but as I navigated the world of private practice, I quickly realized that running a successful dental office required much more than just clinical expertise. It became clear that strong business and management skills were essential to deliver high-quality care. This realization led me to pursue an MBA as a natural progression in my career. I was drawn to the business side of healthcare and wanted to gain the knowledge necessary to manage and grow a thriving dental practice. I also realized that combining my dental expertise with business concepts would allow me to make a greater impact, not only in dentistry but in other industries as well.

What do you hope to achieve beyond completion of your major?
My goal is to combine my knowledge of dentistry and business to make a lasting impact on healthcare. I envision leading a dental practice or healthcare organization that not only delivers exceptional care but also applies business strategies to improve efficiency and enhance patient outcomes. I’m also passionate about increasing awareness of oral hygiene in underserved communities. I want to develop educational programs to promote preventive dental care, especially for low- to middle-income populations who may not have access to the resources they need. By educating these communities on the importance of oral hygiene and providing tools to maintain better oral health, I hope to contribute to improving the overall quality of life in the region.

What do you like most about UTRGV?
What I love most about UTRGV—besides its closeness to my roots in Mexico—is its unwavering commitment to student success. The university offers strong academic programs, and the personalized attention from faculty creates an environment where I feel supported in my educational journey. The cultural diversity here enhances both my academic and social experiences, making UTRGV feel like a second home. Another factor I appreciate is UTRGV’s affordability and financial aid options, which allow me to focus on my studies without constant financial stress.

What does being a Vaquero mean to you?
Being a Vaquero means being part of a rich cultural legacy that spans generations. It represents pride in hard work, commitment to family and community, and respect for the traditions that have shaped the Rio Grande Valley. For me, being a Vaquero means embodying the values of perseverance, responsibility, and adaptability. It’s about honoring my roots while striving to contribute positively to the community and embracing the opportunities that lie ahead.

What opportunities has UTRGV helped you find throughout your community?
UTRGV has given me opportunities to grow both professionally and personally. Through the MBA program, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of healthcare management, leadership, and business operations. This knowledge has prepared me to improve access to dental care and develop innovative solutions to enhance oral health for underserved populations.

What advice do you have for fellow students pursuing their degrees?
To my fellow students, I would say—stay focused on your goals, but don’t forget to enjoy the journey. College isn’t just about academics; it’s about growth, making connections, and discovering yourself. Get involved in organizations, connect with your professors and peers, and take advantage of all the resources UTRGV has to offer. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Whether you’re struggling with coursework or balancing school and life, there’s always someone willing to help. Stay organized, manage your time wisely, and most importantly, believe in yourself. Your hard work and dedication will pay off!
