Why UTRGV?
I chose UTRGV because I wanted to pursue higher education close to home while being part of a university that truly cares about its students. I’d heard great things about the faculty and staff in the School of Social Work — and I’ve experienced their excellence firsthand. The professors are knowledgeable, supportive, and passionate about what they teach. They genuinely want their students to grow, succeed, and make a difference in the world, which has made my experience here even more meaningful.
What made you decide on your current major?
I chose social work because I’ve always had a strong desire to help others and make a positive difference in people’s lives. I’m especially passionate about working in healthcare settings, where social workers play a vital role in providing emotional and practical support to individuals and families.
What do you hope to achieve beyond completion of your major?
After I graduate, I plan to earn my master’s degree in social work and eventually obtain my LCSW license. My goal is to work as a hospital social worker and later open my own private practice. I want to provide people with a safe and supportive space where they can feel understood and find hope during difficult times.
What do you like most about UTRGV?
What I like most about UTRGV are the amazing professors and the countless opportunities I’ve had to grow both personally and professionally. The faculty truly care about helping students reach their full potential, and the university provides so many ways to get involved, develop new skills, and discover your passions. Every semester has challenged me to become a better version of myself.
What does being a Vaquero mean to you?
To me, being a Vaquero means continuing to grow, learn, and give back. It represents perseverance, pride in where I come from, and the drive to make a difference in the community.
What opportunities has UTRGV helped you find throughout your community?
UTRGV has given me many opportunities to get involved in the community through volunteering and service activities. I’ve also met new people who share the same major and goals, which has helped me build meaningful connections and friendships. Working alongside other social work students has allowed me to learn from their experiences and grow both personally and professionally.
What advice do you have for fellow students pursuing their degrees?
Remember that you’re here for a reason. Trust your path, surround yourself with supportive people, and take care of your mental health. Keep pushing forward — all your hard work and perseverance will be worth it in the end.
