Why UTRGV?
UTRGV was an obvious choice for me. It’s so close to home that I was practically raised here, coming to campus with my grandfather, Dr. John P. Abraham, a professor in the College of Engineering and Computer Science, so often as a child. He retired last fall, having worked at the institution since 1976, and a circular plaza on the UTRGV campus was dedicated to him because of his commitment to the university. His hard work has helped me feel better equipped to handle college life.
What made you decide on your current major?
Psychology has always been a pillar of my interests and experiences, especially counseling, abnormal psychology, and social psychology. I’ve been through thick and thin, and learning about the “why” and “how” behind human behavior has brought me peace. My passion lies in understanding through detail—from the world around me to the people beside me. Getting to know the brain is my steppingstone.
What do you hope to achieve beyond completion of your major?
Through my degree, I want to show people that no one is truly alone—that anyone can be understood. By combining my Psychology major with an English minor, I hope to write pieces that touch hearts, shedding light on how pain can be transformed into something human, something we can learn and grow from. No matter what field I enter or how I continue my education, I want to offer peace of mind to others.
What do you like most about UTRGV?
Campus life is vibrant, with so many cultures coming together and events to experience. The campus itself is beautiful and continuously growing. What I love most are the resources available—from the Counseling Center to the Career Center, to the impact our student organizations have on the student body. UTRGV truly supports its students.
What does being a Vaquero mean to you?
Being a Vaquero means being part of a unit. We work together in big ways. We know passion, and we know that perseverance is what carries us forward.
What opportunities has UTRGV helped you find throughout your community?
I’ve worked on campus since the start of my freshman year, currently serving as a Student Manager at the Center for Student Involvement. That experience has taught me so much about the university—it showed me that I’m not alone and that opportunities can be found anywhere, especially through the people around you.
What advice do you have for fellow students pursuing their degrees?
It’s not the end of the world. There is always a way to get there, and you can do it at your own pace. Be kind to yourself as you make the journey.
