For one, UTRGV is much closer to home. I’ve lived in the RGV my whole life and I wasn’t fully ready to leave my home behind. Staying at UTRGV allowed me to have my entire family nearby to support and help me. My major is also environmental science, and I think the RGV is a unique place to study for this degree. Not many people realize how unique the RGV is and how important it is to help protect it.

It was an easy choice for me. I had already taken dual-enrollment courses with UTRGV as a sophomore in high school and continued to do so until my graduation. I did have options to leave, but why would I? I had already built a foundation and friendships with professors and students on campus. It was an obvious choice. The high level of academics, a Division I athletics program on the rise, and the growth of the institution. I invested in UTRGV, and the profit has been tenfold.

During my last two years of high school, I had the opportunity to take several concurrent classes at UTRGV. As a homeschooler, it was a new, exciting experience for me. Because of the friendly community, I quickly felt that UTRGV was where I needed to stay for my bachelor’s degree. I wanted to live at home and stay close to my family, and UTRGV provided just that. I have met wonderful staff, faculty, and students that have challenged me both academically and professionally. UTRGV also has an impressive occupational therapy program that I hope to attend. I chose UTRGV due to the impressive growth (i.e. programs, buildings, student body) the school experienced after merging the Valley’s two universities. Also, like many RGV students, I attend this university to stay close to home as home is where the heart is. To me, one of the most unique things about UTRGV is that it strives to integrate with the local community’s culture and works to alleviate some of its most prevalent problems. I highly doubt you will find something similar with universities in large metropolitan areas.

As a first-generation, low-income student, UTRGV provided me with the financial support and guidance I needed to be able to get a higher education. I received help filling out TASFA forms and received various scholarships throughout my undergraduate career. Now as a graduate student, I received the graduate sustainability fellowship from the UTRGV Office of Sustainability that helps with a large portion of my tuition costs.
