Why UTRGV?
Being able to attend a nationally accredited university and stay close to home is what made UTRGV stand out for me! UTRGV’s commitment to serve the Rio Grande Valley is apparent through the amazing programs and professors they have in place at each campus!

What made you decide on your current major?
I cannot recall a time that music has not been at the center of everything I do. I began singing and taking piano lessons from a young age; this is when my parents instilled in me a love and eagerness for teaching music.

How are you maneuvering being a student during the COVID-19 pandemic?
One of the most challenging parts of being a student during COVID-19 has been staying motivated. At the start of the pandemic, it seemed easier to stop working toward my goals and become complacent. But as time passed, I began to reflect upon my situation and realized how blessed I am to be receiving an education, even during a global pandemic. Being appreciative of the opportunities that I have been given has helped me maneuver being a student during COVID-19.

What are your greatest strengths and what are some challenges?
Adapting has been my biggest strength during COVID-19. Being flexible and learning how to improvise was an essential part of going to college during a pandemic. I believe I was able to accomplish a lot during quarantine because of my ability to adjust. My biggest challenge has been returning to “normal.” It has been a struggle transitioning from virtual learning to in-person teaching, but I know that everyone, including myself, is happy to back.

What do you hope to achieve beyond completion of your major?
As I began studying at UTRGV, I quickly realized the importance of self-confidence and kindness as a musician. My hope as a teacher is to create singers that believe in themselves and enjoy their journey as young performers. Beyond completion of my degree, I would like to begin working as choir director or pursue a master’s in music education!

What do you like most about UTRGV?
Among everything that UTRGV has to offer, I have enjoyed my professors the most! There are not enough words to describe the care they have for their students; they have made a lasting impact in my life and I am grateful for the knowledge, patience, and compassion they share with each student.

What does being a Vaquero mean to you?
For me, being a Vaquero means building each other up! Even across campuses, you can find students encouraging one another and modeling a spirit of unity. I love being a Vaquero!

What opportunities has UTRGV helped you find throughout your community?
UTRGV has made me realize how important it is to surround yourself with positive people. My classmates have been amazing motivators, without them I never would have recognized my own growth throughout the years.

What advice do you have for fellow students pursuing degrees during the COVID-19 pandemic?
Do not give up! Take those classes, write that paper, finish that project; it will all be worth it. Take it one step at a time and be proud of yourself along the way. College is difficult, but you are a Vaquero! We are all here for you, we are all cheering you on, you CAN do this!
