Why UTRGV?
I picked UTRGV because it allows me to stay near home and stay in touch with my family, which is really important to me. Being close to my family provides me with a solid support structure, which I know will help me excel in college. Because of UTRGV's location, I can continue to be engaged in my neighborhood and give back to where I grew up while simultaneously taking advantage of the university's excellent academic opportunities. I feel that staying close to my roots will provide me with the necessary foundation for personal and academic success.
What made you decide on your current major?
I decided to major in mechanical engineering because I've always been interested in how things function and I like tackling challenging problems. Growing up, I liked pulling things apart to learn about the mechanics underlying them, and I recognized that mechanical engineering would allow me to pursue that interest professionally. This field provides numerous opportunities for innovation and practical solutions to enhance everyday living, ranging from creating more efficient engines to establishing sustainable energy systems. I'm intrigued by the challenges of mechanical engineering and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference through technology and design.
What do you hope to achieve beyond completion of your major?
Beyond completing my mechanical engineering major, I wish to pursue a meaningful profession that combines technical competence, leadership, and creativity. My objective is to contribute to initiatives that have a concrete impact, whether that's by building sustainable systems, improving manufacturing processes, or developing efficient solutions that benefit the planet.
What do you like most about UTRGV?
What I enjoy most about UTRGV is the welcoming and diverse community. As a mechanical engineering student, I've had the opportunity to learn from dedicated professors who truly want their students to succeed. Another significant benefit is the hands-on experience we receive; I've been able to work with actual machinery and apply what I've learned in class, which has been essential in preparing me for internships and potential employment opportunities.
What does being a Vaquero mean to you?
To me, being a Vaquero is embracing perseverance, community, and hard work. It is about reflecting my culture and background while pursuing academic and professional excellence. As a Vaquero, I am delighted to be a member of a community that promotes both personal development and communal support. It entails being resourceful, overcoming obstacles, and staying connected to the people and places that have molded me.
What opportunities has UTRGV helped you find throughout your community?
UTRGV has provided me with various invaluable opportunities in the community. I've been able to meet mentors, attend events, and learn from people who work in my area because of the university's connections to local groups and companies.
What advice do you have for fellow students pursuing their degrees?
My advice to other students pursuing their degrees is to be curious, resilient, and open to every opportunity that comes your way. Don't be hesitant to ask questions and seek assistance when needed—learning is a journey, and each question or problem brings you closer to your goals.
