Why UTRGV?
While researching universities that aligned with my life goals, I found that UTRGV offered both Computer Science and Graphic Design—two fields I’m passionate about. What stood out even more was the university’s commitment to providing high-quality education with affordable solutions, especially for students from low-income backgrounds. Having a local university with these opportunities made UTRGV the ideal choice. I knew it would provide me with the resources, support, and skills needed to grow both personally and professionally, preparing me for success in the industry.
What made you decide on your current major?
My passion for Computer Science grew as I attended robotics competitions throughout high school. Finding solutions through the interplay of computer language and mathematical logic gave me a sense of satisfaction unlike anything else. While Computer Science was my primary focus, I also wanted to challenge my Graphic Design skills from my freelance experience, so I decided to add Graphic Design as a minor. This has allowed me to develop my knowledge of the art industry and refine my skills as a professional artist.
What do you hope to achieve beyond completion of your major?
As I approach the end of my college journey, my goal is to see my artwork shared across diverse communities, enriching people’s daily lives with my colorful yet minimalist style. Seeing my work in the community motivates me to continue growing as an artist and strive for greater impact. I envision my creations being recognized on a larger scale, contributing to the visual landscape and leaving a meaningful mark on the world.
What do you like most about UTRGV?
Certain professors remind me how exciting learning new material can be. I’m also lucky to have incredible classmates who inspire me to push myself to become better. Additionally, I’m grateful for the job opportunities I’ve had at UTRGV, which have contributed significantly to my success.
What does being a Vaquero mean to you?
Being a Vaquero means contributing to a growing legacy of excellence and community. I believe students shape the university’s reputation and inspire future generations to join. I want to follow in the footsteps of previous UTRGV alumni and prove that every student has the potential to make an impact.
What opportunities has UTRGV helped you find throughout your community?
Being part of UTRGV has opened doors to opportunities that have helped shape who I am today. The university offers a wide range of part-time student jobs across various departments. Over my four years, I’ve worked as a Student Academic Tutor, a Program Mentor, and currently, a Graphic Designer. These roles allowed me to connect more deeply with my community by helping students academically and creating promotional materials for the university. Each experience has given me valuable job skills early on, which will serve me well in the workforce.
What advice do you have for fellow students pursuing their degrees?
No one will push you harder than you push yourself, so give your future self a reason to be proud of who you are today. Embrace every opportunity—big or small—as if it were your last. All of it contributes to your journey. Surround yourself with people who recognize your potential and guide you in the right direction.
