Why UTRGV?
When I chose UTRGV for college, it was mainly because of how much it benefited my family. My parents didn’t have to worry about tuition costs thanks to my scholarship, and by living at home, I could continue to support them however I could.
What made you decide on your current major?
I love the art of storytelling. I’ve always needed to know who, what, when, where, and how of everything—which naturally led me to journalism and communications. I also have a strong passion for writing, so I wanted a major that would let me tell other people’s stories.
What do you hope to achieve beyond completion of your major?
After earning my bachelor’s degree, I want to start writing content wherever I can. Writers are always needed—whether for creative work or technical writing—so I hope to share stories wherever I go. My dream is to write for an editorial magazine or publish my own book someday.
What do you like most about UTRGV?
I’ve loved so much about UTRGV, but if I had to choose one thing, it would be the professors. They’ve supported me not only throughout my academic journey but in my professional development, too. Their knowledge and wisdom have helped me grow, and although I already loved communications, their courses helped deepen that connection.
What does being a Vaquero mean to you?
To me, being a Vaquero means becoming the best version of yourself with a strong support system behind you. You know how every superhero has their crew? Every Vaquero has a team of professors, friends, and family helping them grow. It’s incredibly fulfilling to be part of a community that offers such heartwarming support.
What opportunities has UTRGV helped you find throughout your community?
Thanks to UTRGV, I’ve gained experiences that have helped me grow professionally. I had the opportunity to intern at The Valley Wedding Pages, where I discovered my love for editorial writing, and I worked as a student assistant copywriter for UTRGV Marketing & Communications, where I strengthened my writing skills.
What advice do you have for fellow students pursuing their degrees?
Take advantage of every opportunity, attend events, and connect with the people around you. College is a time to discover who you are, so enjoy every minute of it. Don’t underestimate what you’re capable of. You’re stronger than you think — you just have to believe in yourself.
