Why UTRGV?
I chose UTRGV primarily because of its proximity to home. While I aspire to move away for my career after graduation, I wanted more time in the Valley to strengthen my connections to my community and culture. UTRGV has provided that and so much more. Here, I have gained confidence, experience, and valuable skills, while also forming lifelong friendships. The university’s deep connection to the culture and community of the Rio Grande Valley is the beating heart of UTRGV, something other schools simply can’t offer, especially not with the same academic value.
What made you decide on your current major?
I entered UTRGV with an associate degree in interdisciplinary studies but had not yet chosen a major. In high school, I struggled to find a field that suited me until my senior year when I joined the yearbook staff as Co-Editor. In that position, I learned about visual design, planning, communication, and leadership from my keen-eyed teacher, Mr. Rodriguez. This experience sparked my passion for marketing—the perfect blend of creativity, human connection, and the realism of the business world. What sealed my decision was seeing the level of involvement and enthusiasm that UTRGV’s RCVCOBE team has for its students’ success.
What do you hope to achieve beyond completion of your major?
As a marketer, the content, and campaigns I create will have an impact on the world. Promoting equity and kindness is a priority for me, both personally and professionally. My ultimate goal is to work for a company that aligns with my values, collaborating with like-minded individuals in a creative environment dedicated to enacting change and giving back to our communities.
What do you like most about UTRGV?
My favorite thing about UTRGV is how it amplifies and supports student voices. The university is deeply engaged with what students want and constantly works to create a welcoming and inclusive environment. From Rec Center programs to student organization events and the many activities hosted by the Student Union, there’s always something happening on campus. No matter your interests, there’s a place for everyone to connect, grow, and feel at home.
What does being a Vaquero mean to you?
I’m proud to be a Vaquero because it means being part of a driven community. Outside of the university, I’ve seen many people my age feeling uncertain about their future, lacking direction or motivation. However, at UTRGV, whether in the medical field, arts, political science, or business, you’ll find hardworking, passionate individuals striving to improve their lives and uplift those around them. The Vaquero determination and grit are evident across all majors, paired with a love for fun and friendship.
What opportunities has UTRGV helped you find throughout your community?
Joining student organizations has connected me to the community in ways I never expected. Becoming a member of the American Marketing Association inspired me through volunteer events, guest speaker meetings, and team-building activities. Being surrounded by driven, passionate people showed me that building a career isn’t an impossible task, it became an achievable goal because I had a supportive community by my side.
What advice do you have for fellow students pursuing their degrees?
Believe in yourself and actively engage in campus life. Take the time to explore your surroundings, attend a random club meeting, hold the door open for someone, or borrow a pencil from a classmate. The smallest actions can lead to meaningful connections. College is a time for growth, change, and new experiences, so don’t spend it rushing to your car after class or isolating yourself in a quiet corner of the library. No matter how capable, intelligent, or driven you are, community and friendship are essential. Embrace them.
