Why UTRGV?
The Rio Grande Valley has always been home for me. Being a Filipino American, I felt a little out of place at a young age as the Hispanic culture was different from my own. Over time, I learned how welcoming the Hispanic culture is. I chose UTRGV because the Valley has given me a family, lifelong friends, and a home.

What made you decide on your current major?
My parents are a huge inspiration to me. They studied nursing in the Philippines and came to America seeking more opportunities for my siblings and me. They made sacrifices, took risks and worked so hard to provide for us. I aspire to be just like my parents. I always knew that I wanted to help people and give back to the communities that raised me.

What do you hope to achieve beyond completion of your major?
Once I complete the nursing program I plan to work either in the PICU or an OR department as I find these the most interesting. My long-term goal is to go back to school and further my education. I hope to get my masters and become either a nurse practitioner or CRNA. As a nurse practitioner, I like the idea of opening a clinic and positively impacting the health of our communities. As for CRNAs, they are more involved during surgeries, which I find fascinating.

What do you like most about UTRGV?
UTRGV has allowed me to stay close to my family and friends, which is very important to me. The campus is relatively small, however, this makes the student body feel more close-knit like its own community.  The university staff and professors make it their mission to help students achieve success, not only in school, but after graduation in our future career paths.

What does being a Vaquero mean to you?
I take pride in being a part of the Vaquero culture and community. Being a Vaquero means being a part of a family. Ever since I was a freshman, I’ve been making life-long relationships with people who have the same passions that I have. UTRGV has allowed me to form bonds that have supported me throughout my educational journey.

What opportunities has UTRGV helped you find throughout your community?
Working on campus at P-16 Outreach and Testing Services has allowed me to spread the Vaquero pride out to the youth in our community. As a mentor in the Father-Son program, I get to inspire the youth to pursue their interests in STEM. By encouraging younger students to attain higher education right here at home with UTRGV, they can strengthen and grow the Vaquero culture for future generations. I want to thank my supervisor, Ms. Lorena Roxburgh, for giving me this opportunity and guiding me on how to grow as a mentor and leader.

What advice do you have for fellow students pursuing their degrees?
My advice to future students is to not be afraid to chase their passion. UTRGV is a great place to grow and work towards your dreams. Find what you want in life and pursue it. While the road may seem difficult, with diligence, hard work, and persistence anything is possible.
