Study Abroad to Latin America

Art History in Peru

UTRGV offers study abroad programs to Mexico, Argentina, Peru, Belize, and Costa Rica. The Peru study abroad program features art history instruction in Peru. This trip examines the art, architecture, and visual culture of the Peruvian Altiplano in the Precolumbian and Viceregal period (1532-1821). The program takes various hikes to ancient Imperial Inca sites to view the stunning architecture at Pisac, Ollantaytambo, and Macchu Pichu. In Cuzco, walking tours also focus on viewing painting, sculpture, and architecture produced in the colonial city during the Baroque period, where powerful religious orders, secular leaders, and Inca elites negotiated their identity with artworks displayed in splendid colonial churches and convents (many of which remain in situ). The course combines pre-Columbian art history and studies of ecosystems in the field of Biology with optional Honors College credit for Honors students.
