Official university-funded or university-sponsored student organizations are considered part of the university's institutional structure. As official university entities, they may use the university name as part of their approved branding in accordance with UTRGV brand standards and guidance from the UT System Trademark & Licensing Office.
Organizations must work under the guidance and approval of their departmental advisor and University Marketing & Communications (UMC) to select one of the following logo options:
Option A: Academic Secondary Logo.
Option B: Spirit Secondary Logo.
Option C: A Non-UTRGV Trademark Logo.
Once a logo option has been selected, the organization must use that logo consistently and may not alternate between different logo styles for different events, audiences, or promotional materials.
- Options A and B are official university logos and cannot be altered or recreated.
- Official secondary logos are produced exclusively by University Marketing & Communications.
- Organizations selecting Option C may use either:
- the university name directly (e.g., Student Government Association – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley), or
- the affiliation format (e.g., Student Government Association at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley),
- When multiple departments or organizations collaborate on an event, University Marketing & Communications will provide the appropriate approved logo layout.
- University Marketing & Communications can provide approved color variations and production-ready artwork for licensed vendors to help reduce expenses during the printing process.
- University Marketing & Communications assists departments in ensuring branding guidelines and compliance with university branding, trademark, and licensing requirements are met before materials are produced.
Non-Funded Registered Student Organizations (RSOs)
Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) are student-created organizations that register with the university but are not official university departments or university-funded institutional entities. Because these organizations operate independently while maintaining an affiliation with UTRGV, their branding must clearly identify that relationship.
Organizations may develop their own visual identity, provided they comply with the following requirements:
- Organizations may not use, modify, recreate, or incorporate any official UTRGV primary or secondary logo into their own logo.
- To indicate university affiliation, organizations using the university name must include either:
- " at UTRGV™ ", or
- " at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley™ "
- The affiliation wording must appear in a standard, non-stylized typeface and may not be incorporated as a graphic element within the custom logo.
- Organizations may choose not to reference the university in their logo; however, doing so may reduce recognition of their affiliation with UTRGV.
- Any promotional items or printed materials using the university name must be produced through licensed vendors and follow university trademark and licensing procedures.
- Organizations are encouraged to incorporate the university's official colors when appropriate to promote a cohesive visual identity across campus.
