Verification FAQs

What is Verification?

  • Verification is a review process created by the U.S. Department of Education that enables the UTRGV Financial Aid Office to determine the accuracy of information provided on students' financial aid applications. The Financial Aid Office will request documentation such as copies of Tax Return Transcripts filed by the student and, if applicable, student's parent(s) or spouse.

How do I complete the required forms?
  • Complete all required sections of the verification form. Do not leave blanks. Indicate zero or Not Applicable (N/A) if appropriate. Tax Filers must submit a clear copy of their Tax Return Transcript or use the IRS import functionality at to provide their Income Tax Information. Effective January 9, 2019 a signed copy of 2016 tax returns, that were submitted to the IRS, can be submitted in place of a tax transcript. Provide required signatures on all statements. Dependent students must include at least one parent's signature.

  • You may download the verification forms from our menu on the left side of this page under Forms section.

What happens after Verification is complete?
  • The verification process could take approximately three weeks from the date we receive all requested documents, especially if documents are submitted after our priority deadline (July 1st) or if corrections are required after the review process, due to conflicting information. Within ten working days thereafter, you will receive an award notification from the Financial Aid Office outlining your eligibility for financial assistance. There are times when our office will send more than one award notification during the academic year, especially if there are changes made to your financial aid award.
What are the benefits of applying early?
  • Applying and completing your financial aid application in a timely manner could result in: Eligibility for Federal and State aid, which is awarded on a first come, first serve basis Financial aid money will be available prior to the payment due date. An early disbursement may be available for purchasing books/supplies for the semester

What are the deadlines for submitting documents?
  • We strongly advise students to submit their verification paperwork as soon as possible to prevent delays in the awarding and disbursement of aid. The last day to submit documentation for each academic year will be no later than ninety (90) days from the last date of enrollment or June 1st, whichever is earlier. Your failure to provide the requested documentation within the specified time period may result in the denial of financial aid for a semester or academic year and future applications for financial aid not being processed.
