UTRGV has several opportunities that help students earn wages through the Work-Study Program.

Work-Study is a financial aid-based program (Federal, State, or Institutional) that assists students seeking part-time student employment. This “self-help” aid helps students develop professional skills and experience by working on campus. Students earn their Work-Study award through part-time student employment.

The Work-Study Program funds 100% of the wages for Work-Study student employees. This assists in subsidizing the costs associated with hiring student employees. Best of all, it helps departments fund more student employment positions through these savings.

Note: Work-Study funding is based on the student’s eligibility and funding availability. Once Work-Study funds have been exhausted, students can still be hired as Direct Wage!

Hiring Process

JobX

All employers must submit a hiring request for review through JobX for hourly student employment. Access to JobX can be obtained by emailing the Student Employment office at studentemployment@utrgv.edu. Once the request is received, the work-study team will review the student’s eligibility. If the student is eligible and if funding permits, the work-study team will add the work-study account/cost center that will be used to pay the work-study wages. This is a multistep process that requires Student Employment, Financial Aid, and Human Resources to review student eligibility.

New hires will be required to complete a Criminal Background Check and i9 employment authorization form, as well as additional On- Boarding documents. Please keep in mind that Human Resources must give final approval before a student may begin working.

For the Human Resources On-Boarding links visit our Work-Study Resources and complete the On-Boarding items needed for your employment.

Work-study Graduate Assistantships

Students eligible for the Work-Study Program may also be hired under assistantships. The following student employment positions qualify as work-study roles. Hiring these positions will be processed through PeopleAdmin or the HR Portal.

  • 10082 – Graduate Assistant WS
  • 10081 – Graduate Research Assistant WS
  • 10080 – Graduate Teaching Assistant WS

If the student is a new hire, submit a Hire Proposal (HP) through PeopleAdmin. For rehired students, submit a CJD via the HR Portal. Be sure to use the correct work-study position numbers, as incorrect numbers will prevent the work-study team from being included in the workflow. Please keep in mind that Human Resources must give final approval before a student may begin working.

For any questions regarding assistantships, please contact the Graduate College.
