Why UTRGV?
I chose to attend UTRGV because it allows me to pursue my career goals while staying connected to the community that has shaped me. It offers meaningful opportunities for students, while remaining affordable and close to home.
What made you decide on your current major?
I chose my major in MLS because I wanted to focus more directly on human healthcare, particularly the behind-the-scenes role in patient diagnosis and care. At the same time, I wanted to continue working in a lab setting, which has always been my favorite part of my science courses at UTRGV. This major allows me to do both.
What do you hope to achieve beyond completion of your major?
I hope to pursue a graduate degree, contribute to research, and give back to my RGV community. Through my education, I want to help by performing accurate diagnostic testing, addressing public health concerns, and educating others about health.
What do you like most about UTRGV?
What I like most about UTRGV is its professors. Every professor I’ve had the opportunity to learn from has been passionate about their field and deeply committed to their students.
What does being a Vaquero mean to you?
Being a Vaquero means being part of a hardworking, passionate, and resilient community. I am surrounded by individuals who take pride in where they come from and are driven to create a better future for themselves and their community.
What opportunities has UTRGV helped you find throughout your community?
Through UTRGV, I have engaged with my community by volunteering at local health events and participating in outreach efforts that raise awareness about chronic diseases. These experiences have allowed me to apply what I’ve learned in the classroom to real-world situations while giving back to the Rio Grande Valley. UTRGV has also connected me with internships that support academic and professional growth and provide opportunities to get involved in research.
What advice do you have for fellow students pursuing their degrees?
It’s okay not to know everything. Everyone moves at their own pace, and UTRGV offers many resources and supportive staff who are ready to help. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, and enjoy your time here — it goes by quickly.
