Why UTRGV?
It is a great university close to home, allowing me to stay near my friends and family while still receiving an excellent education.

What made you decide on your current major?
I am using my degree as a pre-medical pathway, and I decided on this field because both of my parents work in the medical field. From a young age, medicine felt like a calling for me, and I believe the College of Health Professions will best prepare me for future success.

What do you hope to achieve beyond completion of your major?
I hope to continue pursuing my education with the goal of becoming a board-certified anesthesiologist and helping patients during their most vulnerable moments, when they are asleep.

What do you like most about UTRGV?
I love the atmosphere. It feels like a tight-knit community, similar to a small town, while still offering the resources and experiences of a large city. As a member of the marching band, the crowds have shown us that there is no one quite like the people of UTRGV when it comes to showing support.

What does being a Vaquero mean to you?
For me, what stands out most is the sense of community. Being a Vaquero means being part of a larger family that stretches across the entire Valley. I have seen that support firsthand while leading the marching band during its first year of football, and it has been inspiring to experience the overwhelming love and pride from our community. That excitement for what the future holds is what being a Vaquero means to build something meaningful and solidifying your future.

What opportunities has UTRGV helped you find throughout your community?
UTRGV has opened the door to opportunities for camaraderie and leadership through newly expanded programs such as the drill team, marching band, and football. I have the privilege of representing the entire university at events such as football games and parades in my role as head drum major of the university, which allows for direct community outreach.

What advice do you have for fellow students pursuing their degrees?
My advice to fellow students is to take advantage of the many opportunities the university offers. Go to parades, attend games—no matter the sport—and participate in rallies, as these experiences help build pride in being a Vaquero. Even when things don’t seem to be going your way, remember that it takes a special person to keep climbing the ladder without knowing what’s at the top. Be that person. Be special.
