Program Modality: Campus

The Bachelor’s degree in American Sign Language and Interpretation (ASLI) provides students with the essential skills to become proficient, confident, and professional ASLI practitioners. The ASLI degree equips entry-level practitioners with the knowledge and skills to become effective ASL communicators. Upon completion, graduates of the program will be eligible for state and national ASL Interpreter certification and/or specialized state certification in Tri-lingual Interpretation.

The Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Science provides students with the knowledge and skills for admission to professional schools in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, and more.

The Biomedical Science program empowers future health leaders with innovative educational experiences in advanced bioscience topics such as molecular cell biology, molecular genetics, and genomics, including anatomy, physiology, neuroscience, and human health.

Program Modality: Campus

The Bachelor’s degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders prepares students to provide skills to individuals with communication disorders. After graduation, students will be eligible to apply to graduate school in the fields of speech-language pathology, audiology, or a related field. Graduates of the program are eligible to apply for licensure to practice in the State of Texas as a Speech-Language Pathologist Assistant.

In the Communication Sciences and Disorders program, graduates are equipped with the knowledge and skills to make a difference in people’s lives through the prevention, assessment, and treatment of communicative disorders. A degree in communication sciences and disorders offers opportunities to assist individuals and communities in various healthcare settings.

Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science

Program Modality: Campus

The Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science equips students with the advanced knowledge and skills required to improve the quality of life of others. Students receive quality training in the prevention and treatment of chronic health conditions such as diabetes, obesity, pulmonary rehabilitation, and more. The program provides students with a foundation in basic clinical laboratory and health fitness techniques that have the potential to advance career opportunities in exercise science fields. This program offers concentrations. Upon graduation, students are prepared for applicable national certification exams.

Health Services Technology (BAT)

Bachelor of Applied Technology in Health Services Technology

Program Modality: Online

The Health Services Technology program was created for allied health practitioners with an AAS degree in a health profession such as Radiologic Technology, Respiratory Therapy, Medical Laboratory Technology, and other health professions. Program courses are offered in a flexible, affordable, online format to allow working healthcare professionals and those at a distance to continue their education while working. Topics of study include healthcare systems, ethics, leadership, education, and more. Completing this program will help healthcare professionals move into supervisory and entry-level management positions in their current field and prepare them for graduate programs in health science fields. Students must apply to the program and be admitted to this major. Health Services Technology is also available as a minor for students of any other major at UTRGV.

Students will develop a strong foundation in clinical laboratory knowledge to pursue future certification and employment as Medical Laboratory Scientists.

The Medical Laboratory Science program provides students with the foundation to pursue careers in medicine, dentistry, and other specialized medical science fields. Graduates are essential to the analysis, prevention, and diagnosis of diseases through advanced clinical laboratory skills.

The program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).

Program Modality: Campus

The Master’s degree in Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling provides students with advanced skills and knowledge in a variety of rehabilitative counseling services. The program prepares graduate students with the skills to assist and empower individuals affected by disabilities and help them live a productive life.

The Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling program equips graduate students with in-depth knowledge of rehabilitation counseling services to effectively manage individual and group counseling, case management, rehabilitation research, and more.

The program is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP).

Program Modality: Campus

The Master’s degree in Dietetics provides the required didactic coursework and supervised experiential learning to prepare students with the knowledge and skills to become an entry-level Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN). 

The Dietetics coursework includes competencies, performance indicators, and practice illustrations that allow students to demonstrate critical thinking, interprofessional collaboration, communication, evidence-based research, ethics, leadership, and dietetics knowledge. Students will be placed in a variety of practicum settings to complete competencies that prepare graduates to take the RDN exam.

The Master’s degree in Exercise Science provides students with the in-depth knowledge and research capabilities to become exercise science practitioners. The program equips graduates with advanced skills in the prevention and treatment of diseases such as diabetes, obesity, hypertension, and many more. The Exercise Science program provides graduate scholars with the competence and mastery in exercise science services to apply theoretical and practical applications of exercise science for providing high-quality care to all communities.

The M.S. in Health Sciences with a concentration in Clinical Laboratory Sciences online program provides advanced knowledge for certified medical laboratory scientists and medical technologists seeking to advance their careers.

Focused on the major areas of laboratory medicine as well as management and leadership, this 100% online master's degree prepares you for middle management in a hospital or reference laboratories. The program equips students with the expertise to develop strong leadership, interpersonal, critical thinking, and clinical research competencies to address health concerns.  The Physician Assistant program provides students with the expertise and professionalism in healthcare to address medical, behavioral, and social concerns across many healthcare environments.

The program is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA).

Doctor of Occupational Therapy

Program Modality: Campus

The Doctoral degree in Occupational Therapy prepares students to become highly qualified entry-entry level, occupational therapists. The holistic curriculum integrates didactic and experiential learning in a variety of settings, providing students with entry-level skills in clinical practice, administration, clinical research, leadership, program and policy development, advocacy, education, and theory development. Didactic and experiential learning creates reflective and holistic practitioners who understand the complexity of occupational engagement and systems across a variety of settings, populations, and geography. Partnerships with local health care systems, clinics, and non-profit organizations further give students clinical and critical thinking skills to assume leadership roles in the community as ethical and capable practitioners.

Doctoral Degree

Physical Therapy (DPT)

Doctor of Physical Therapy

Program Modality: Campus

The Department of Physical Therapy offers an entry-level Doctorate of Physical Therapy* (DPT) degree. The program is a 3-year, 9-semester full time, graduate program that will prepare graduates to be competent and compassionate licensed physical therapists working toward optimizing health and physical function across South Texas and beyond. Students will engage in didactic and hands-on experiences to develop the knowledge and skills to master the evaluation and treatment of people impacted by injury and disease across the spectrum of physical therapy practice to include those with musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiopulmonary and multisystem disorders. Under the guidance and mentorship of expert faculty, students will work individually and collectively to develop and hone their evaluative skills, clinical reasoning, critical thinking, and application of evidence-based practice to practice in a complex and dynamic healthcare system. 

The first class for the program will start in June 2025. Graduates from the first graduating class will be eligible to sit for the licensure examination in the summer of 2028. The Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy typically offers test dates in January, April, July and October each year.

Rehabilitation Counseling (PhD)

Doctor of Philosophy in Rehabilitation Counseling

Program Modality: Campus

The Doctoral degree in Rehabilitation Counseling is designed primarily to prepare students to become rehabilitation educators, researchers, and administrators, and provides the academic preparation to pursue certification as rehabilitation counselors. The program focuses on advanced training in counseling specializing in working with people with disabilities.

The program is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP).
