The Teacher Certification Roadmap provides a clear and structured path that all teacher candidates follow throughout their journey in the Educator Preparation Program at UTRGV. This comprehensive guide outlines each critical step, from initial admission to final certification, ensuring candidates understand the requirements and milestones they must achieve.

By following this roadmap, teacher candidates can confidently navigate their preparation process, ensuring they are fully equipped to become effective, certified educators ready to make a positive impact in the classroom.

Teacher Certification Roadmap

  • Begin the exam preparation cycle Texas Examinations of Educator Standards (TExES) Test Approval Process
    • Content / Core Subjects
    • Science of Teaching Reading (STR)
      (For Elementary and ELAR 4-8 only)
    • Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities (PPR)
    • Supplemental Exams (if needed)

  • Submit your Texas Examinations of Educator Standards (TExES) Testing Request Application in Watermark Student Learning and Licensure
    • Upload study preparation materials as assigned
  • Schedule official certification exam and redeem your voucher (if applicable)

  • Test for official certification exam
  • Repeat steps 1-3 for all exams required for certification

Clinical Experiences

  • Apply to qualifying clinical experience route:
    • Traditional Clinical Teaching
    • Teacher Residency
    • Internship
    • STEP-UP

  • Apply for Certification (upon completion of all program requirements). This is a two-step process:
    1. Submit Undergraduate Standard Certification Application in Watermark SL&L
    2. Apply and pay for certificate with TEAL
