Initial teaching certificates may be earned along with bachelor's degree studies in specific fields of certification. Students interested in teaching at the elementary school level will seek a Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies with specializations in bilingual education, early childhood, English as a second language, or special education (EC-6 grade level certifications) from the Teaching and Learning Department (EEDUC 3.202 and BMAIN 2.306).

Bachelor's degrees which have teacher certification tracks are listed at UTRGV Undergraduate Programs. Certification tracks are listed below.  

Students interested in teaching at the middle school or high school grade levels will seek secondary (4-8, 7-12) or all-level (EC-12) certification and must declare a major in the subject they will teach. These students will follow an academic major degree plan with teacher certification (i.e., Art Education major with EC-12 teacher certification, English major with 4-8 teacher certification, Social Studies Composite major with 7-12 teacher certification).  

Visit with the academic department for degree plans and advisement. Students must complete the academic department degree plan and teacher certification coursework in the College of Education and P-16 Integration upon formal admission to the Teacher Education Program to be eligible to be recommended for teacher certification in the State of Texas. 

All first-year students, and sophomore-level students seeking degree plans with teacher certification are encouraged to meet an advisor at the Academic Advising Center located at BMAIN 1.402 in Brownsville (One West University Drive Boulevard) or International Trade & Technology Building (ITT) located in Edinburg (1201 West University Drive).
