Community

At times, you might perceive yourself as the sole student with dependents on campus or in your classes. However, rest assured that you are not alone. Draw wisdom from fellow Vaqueros who have encountered similar situations, and explore the available resources and organizations tailored for students with dependents.

Remember, support is available, and you’re part of a community that understands your unique circumstances!

Student Stories

The experiences shared by students highlight valuable insights from both current and former Vaqueros who have navigated their academic journey while balancing family responsibilities.

Tips for Success

Here are the tips for success from experienced Vaquero students with dependents:

  • Connect with other students with dependents: They understand what you’re going through and can provide valuable insights to help you navigate both school and parenting.
  • Have fun!: Remember that you belong at UTRGV just like any other student. Your unique journey doesn’t diminish your worthiness of an amazing college experience.
  • Talk about your difficulties and seek help: Vaqueros are often willing to assist. If they can’t directly help, they can guide you to someone who can.
  • Schedule quiet study and homework hours: Find pockets of time during daycare, your child’s school hours, or when your partner or support system can care for your child.
  • Attend professor’s office hours: Many professors are parents themselves and want to support you. Take advantage of getting to know them.
  • Build a relationship with your advisor: They can help you schedule classes around child care and provide guidance on registration.
  • Explore UTRGV’s incredible resources: Utilize the available support networks and services.
  • Be kind to yourself: Balancing academics and family responsibilities is commendable and challenging. Acknowledge your efforts and achievements!

Get Involved

Explore UTRGV’s Student Parent Organization (SPO) to connect with fellow students who also have dependents. SPO serves as a supportive community for UTRGV students balancing academic responsibilities and family life. Their mission of this organization would be to make our educational journey simple, successful, and enjoyable, this organization's goals are to support students who are parents, encourage academic success, provide access to resources, promote advocacy, establish a support group, and build a community of student parents by establishing a place where student-parents may interact, offer support, and connect with others going through similar problems. Lastly, to encourage our next generation to give higher education a priority.

Additionally, consider exploring UTRGV’s Family Involvement resources, which provide support and information for families transitioning into the university environment. Remember, you’re not alone, and there’s a community ready to support you!
