Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs)
The TRL scale helps assess the maturity of a technology from concept to commercialization. Use this guide to identify where your innovation stands before consulting with OTC.
| TRL | Stage | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Basic Principles Observed | Scientific principles identified. Focus is on discovery and understanding. |
| 2 | Technology Concept Formulated | Practical applications proposed. Analytical studies begin. |
| 3 | Experimental Proof of Concept | Critical functions demonstrated. Initial lab validation of components. Applied research continues; early lab measurements validate predictions of separate elements. |
| 4 | Prototype Validated in Lab | Alpha prototype tested in lab. Performance targets appear achievable. |
| 5 | Prototype Validated in Field | Beta prototype tested in relevant environment. Higher fidelity. |
| 6 | Prototype Demonstrated in Industrial Environment | Engineering-scale prototype tested in operational setting. |
| 7 | System Demonstrated in Operational Environment | Full system demonstrated under real-world conditions. |
| 8 | Final Testing and Evaluation | System incorporated into commercial design. Ready for market entry. |
| 9 | Successful Deployment | Technology proven in real-world use. Fully operational and adopted. |
When to Engage with OTC Based on TRL
- TRL 1: Keep researching, but start thinking about IP.
- TRL 2–3: Contact OTC for disclosure and strategy.
- TRL 4–5: Work with OTC on licensing, funding, and prototype validation.
- TRL 6+: OTC focuses on commercialization deals and industry engagement.
TRL 2–3 and above
When you have identified a practical application (TRL 2) or have proof of concept (TRL 3), submit your pre-disclosure at https://redcap.utrgv.edu/surveys/?s=M33A7LWFMJD879C4
OTC can:
- Help assess patentability and IP protection.
- Advise on market potential and commercialization strategy.
- Connect you with funding opportunities for prototype development.
Why Not Wait Until Later?
If you wait until TRL 6+, you might miss:
- Early IP protection (critical before publishing or presenting).
- Funding opportunities for early-stage development.
- Industry partnerships that can accelerate progress.
