2023 Faculty Awards

2023 Nominees and Award Recipients


Goal: To provide recognition of faculty who excel in the areas of Teaching, Research, Clinical Care and Innovation, and/or Service.

UTRGV School of Medicine will conduct an annual ceremony as part of the quarterly faculty townhall or other event to honor the recipients of SOM Faculty Awards.

General Eligibility Criteria:
All full-time UTRGV faculty members who, at the time of nomination, have completed at least three consecutive years of service at UTRGV are eligible for an award.

Categories

  1. Teaching | Open to all affiliated faculty who teach medical students and/or residents.
    Four awards will be given:
    • Outstanding Achievement in Pre-clerkship Teaching (Year 1-2)
      • Full-time UTRGV faculty.
    • Outstanding Achievement in Clerkship Teaching (Year 3-4)
      • Full-time UTRGV faculty.
    • Outstanding Community Faculty teaching.
    • Outstanding GME teaching.

Specific Criteria:

  • The successful nominee models professionalism; makes major, enduring contributions to learning; provides meaningful, specific, actionable feedback to learners; engages learners meaningfully in patient care; demonstrates using evidence-based patient care; and/or directly observes learners with patients.
  1. Research| Open to all faculty engaged in basic or clinical research in the SOM.
    Two awards will be given:
    • Outstanding Achievement in Research by a Senior Investigator
    • Outstanding Achievement in Research by an Early-Stage Investigator

Specific Criteria:

  • The successful nominee will have made significant scholarly contributions to their field, achieved national recognition, and/or conducted significant research while a UTRGV faculty member
  1. Clinical Care and Innovation| Open to all full-time clinical faculty.
    One award will be given.
    • Outstanding Achievement in Clinical Care and Innovation Award

Specific Criteria:

  • The successful nominee exemplifies excellence in patient care, is a leader in advancing clinical innovations, and has profoundly impacted learners, trainees, colleagues, and patients.
  1. Service | Open to all faculty
    • Outstanding Achievement in Service Award

Specific Criteria:

  • The successful candidate exemplifies excellence in service contributions to the School of Medicine, Rio Grande Valley community, and/or profession.

Award: Each awardee will receive a plaque.

Award Nomination process:

Any individual may nominate faculty for awards. Self-nominations are allowed.

The deadline to submit nominations via online form is Friday, June, 16th 2023, by 5:00 p.m.

Friday, June 16, 2023, by 5:00 pm Deadline to submit nominations for Faculty Awards online.
Friday, June 23, 2023 Nominees will be informed of their nomination by the Office of Faculty Affairs.
Monday, July 3, 2023 Review of applications begins
Friday, July 21, 2023 Deadline for the Awards Committee to complete its review.
Friday, July 28, 2023 Deadline for the notification of the winners.
Tuesday, August 15, 2023 Award Ceremony

  1. Teaching
    Determination of awardees will be based upon excellence in teaching.
    Nominations will be solicited from SOM course/clerkship directors, residency directors, students, residents, and faculty.

  2. Research
    Determination of awardees will be based on significant research contributions.
    Nominations will be solicited from department chairs and the associate dean for research.

  3. Clinical Care and Innovation
    Determination of awardees will be based upon excellence in clinical performance.
    Nominations will be solicited from clinical department chairs and other health care professionals.

  4. Service
    Determination of awardees will be based on the impact of service and demonstrated leadership, commitment, and dedication to the SOM and profession.

Award Committee

Appointment of the Awards Committee will be made by Dean in collaboration with the Faculty Assembly Executive (FAEC) committee supported by the Office of Faculty Affairs. The FAEC will each recommend five faculty members to serve on the Awards Committee, and the Dean will select five members, with representatives from both nomination groups, from the list of ten to serve and a committee lead.

The Awards Committee will be responsible for reviewing nominations and recommending Award winners to the Dean.

Visibility and Communication

Award information including past winners will be placed on the UTRGV SOM website on both the pages for Faculty Affairs and for the Faculty Assembly.
