Why UTRGV?
When searching for universities to attend, my locale played a critical role in my decision-making process. Therefore, I prioritized schools with robust online programs that are accredited and well-ranked. The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) met all these criteria. Additionally, the costs, program structure (accelerated), and payment by module added significant value to my decision. UTRGV’s affordable tuition, flexible payment options, and the ability to complete programs at an accelerated pace were crucial factors that aligned with my academic and financial goals. Lastly, but by no means least, the UTRGV mission of catering to diversity was a significant influence in my choice. Their commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse learning environment resonated deeply with my values and aspirations.

What made you decide on your current major?
With an academic background in Accounts and Economics, a profession in auditing, and experience working in the healthcare industry, I sought a way to integrate these areas to transform the healthcare sector in my country and the broader Caribbean region. Data-driven analysis to inform patient-centered care is one of the most effective methods (if not the best) to identify areas of focus, allocate resources efficiently, and optimize outcomes. Therefore, pursuing Business Analytics with a concentration in healthcare was an obvious choice.

What do you hope to achieve beyond completion of your major?
Beyond completing my major in Business Analytics with a specialization in Healthcare Analytics, I hope to achieve the following:

  • Utilize data to identify trends and predict outcomes, to assist medical practitioners with personalized treatment plans, leading to better health outcomes.
  • Recommend data-driven strategies to improve patient care, streamline operations, and enhance the efficiency of healthcare systems in my country and the Caribbean region.
  • Foster partnerships with healthcare professionals and technology experts to create a multidisciplinary approach to healthcare improvement.
  • Provide evidence-based recommendations to policymakers for resource allocation and healthcare policies, ensuring decisions are grounded in robust data analysis.
  • Keep abreast of the latest developments in business and healthcare analytics to continuously improve my skills and contribute to the field effectively.

What do you like most about UTRGV?
It feels like everything it has to offer. From its:

  • Payment options by module and financial aid offered by UTRGV made pursuing my degree financially feasible and stress-free.
  • The mission of catering to diversity is particularly important to me. The inclusive environment fosters a rich, multicultural learning experience and promotes a sense of community.

What advice do you have for fellow students pursuing their degrees?
Pursuing studies, especially in an accelerated program can be challenging but it is rewarding. Some key tips and tricks are:

  • Staying organized. Blackboard is your best friend. Your calendar reminders and material are all there.
  • Be active. Participate in class discussions, contribute meaningfully to group assignments, and reach out for help from professors when necessary (not just to ask but to engage).
  • Always be positive. View challenges as opportunities to learn and grow. Stay updated with trends and utilize resources offered through the library and online. Resilience and adaptability are key traits in both your academic and professional life.
  • Self-care. Pause at least one day a week. Get proper sleep and enjoy the experience. This helps to reduce stress.
