Why UTRGV?
UTRGV has always been my school of choice. Its proximity to my hometown and the opportunities available to a low-income high school student made it the ideal college for me.
What made you decide on your current major?
My interest in management began when I started working for UTRGV’s Office of Human Resources. On my first day, I was a film major with no prior knowledge of HR, feeling a mix of nerves and uncertainty, but little did I know how much that role would impact my life. Over nearly two years as a Student Trainer for Organizational Development & Training, I gained a new perspective on management and its importance in both business and everyday life. I thoroughly enjoyed making an impact on employees by fostering team-building skills through our training. I vividly remember the day I switched my major from film to management, confident in the direction I wanted to take. Of course, I must thank my mentors, Amnah Imtiaz and Krystal Marroquin, for always pushing me forward and giving me the opportunity to realize my full potential. I am forever grateful to them.
What do you hope to achieve beyond completion of your major?
I intend to continue my career in HR, specifically in training. I hope to work for a company that fits my skill set. I am currently interning with Human Resources Organizational Development & Training through the Student Experience Internship (SEI), which will help me foster best HR practices and further my career development.
What do you like most about UTRGV?
The community. Every interaction I've had at this institution has been a positive one. Even during the most stressful times, whether it's students preparing for finals or employees juggling their workloads, there's always a sense of kindness and support. People will hold the door open for you, offer to guide you when you're lost, and always greet you with a warm smile.
What does being a Vaquero mean to you?
Being a Vaquero means embracing a spirit of unity and always striving to uplift those around you while contributing to the greater good. It’s more than just wearing the name—it’s about embodying values like compassion, teamwork, and a shared commitment to making a positive impact.
What opportunities has UTRGV helped you find throughout your community?
Recently, I joined the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), where I look forward to expanding my knowledge in HR and gaining skills that will help my professional growth and allow me to continue making a positive impact. Through SHRM, I hope to connect with like-minded individuals and work together to support local causes, further strengthening bonds within our community.
What advice do you have for fellow students pursuing their degrees?
Do not be afraid of change. This is your opportunity to take risks and step out of your comfort zone. UTRGV will offer you many experiences and opportunities, so don’t be scared to follow the path that calls you.
