Family Leave Pool
The Family Leave Pool (FLP) is a reserve of sick and vacation leave hours donated by employees to provide eligible employees with more flexibility in the:
- Bonding with and caring for children during a children's first year following birth, adoption, or foster placement; and
- Caring for a seriously ill family member or employee, including pandemic-related illnesses or complications caused by a pandemic
Eligibility for Family Leave Pool
Family Leave Pool (FLP) is available to UTRGV employees who are scheduled to work a minimum of 20 hours per week for at least 4.5 continuous months in a position that does not require student status as a condition of employment. Additionally, the employee’s available paid leave must be exhausted. The pool provides a source of additional paid leave for employees when the employee or employee’s immediate family member has an eligible reason. You may also qualify for Family Medical Leave (FMLA) or another leave type. If eligible, FMLA will run concurrently with FLP.
Award
The lifetime maximum award is 90 days (720 hours) or one-third of the sick leave pool balance, whichever is less. Any unused paid leave hours awarded from the pool will be returned to the pool by the pool administrator once the condition of the eligible leave ends. The estate of a deceased employee is not entitled to payment for unused sick leave awarded from the pool.
Using Family Leave Pool
All available sick leave must be exhausted prior to reporting FLP. If you’re on continuous leave, the monthly leave accrual is available to you only when you’ve returned to work. Paid leave assigned from the pool may only be used for absences directly pertaining to the approved medical condition.
