Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)
The UTRGV's Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is specifically charged with the responsibility to assure the humane care and treatment of animals used or intended for use in all research, research training, experimentation, teaching, biological testing, or for related purposes involving live vertebrate animals.
Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC)
The Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) is a federally mandated university committee responsible for reviewing research activities utilizing recombinant DNA (rDNA) and biohazardous materials to ensure that UTRGV principal investigators and lab personnel are adequately trained and utilize best practices when employing biological agents in research.
Institutional Review Board (IRB) for Human Subjects Protection
The UTRGV's Institutional Review Board (IRB) reviews all research that meets the definition of human subjects research. The board is made up of UTRGV faculty, staff, and members of the community. The board evaluates research proposals to make sure the planned research follows the ethical principles of human subjects protection and that it adheres to university policies and federal regulations.
International Oversight Committees (IOC)
The International Oversight Committees (IOC) helps ensure the institution minimizes risk and is in a position to assist faculty, staff or students if necessary, the IOC reviews requests to travel to restricted regions and makes determinations and recommendations regarding those requests to the Office of the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and to the Office of the President. The IOC is a standing, non-academic University-level committee.
