Field Operations Safety Program
School of Earth, Environmental, and Marine Sciences is to provide students a unique integrative education and training experience that prepares them to meet the challenges and opportunities in the multiple dimensions of contemporary earth, environmental and marine sciences. All degree programs take advantage of the unique and exciting coupled human-natural systems of the Lower Rio Grande Valley watershed and south Texas' coastal, estuarine, and marine ecosystems.
The Department of Environmental, Health, Safety, and Risk Management coordinates and monitors laboratory and field safety functions and guidelines associated with research and teaching laboratories. In fulfilling these responsibilities, the UTRGV developed the Field Operations Safety Program. This manual provides safety guidelines for all individuals participating in field activities, including but not limited to area managers, instructors, teaching assistants, course coordinators, staff, volunteers, and students. Each of these environments pose unique considerations for the health and safety of the individuals working and teaching there.
Field Operations Safety Manual
The UTRGV EHSRM Field Operations Safety Manual serves as a reference document and teaching tool to promote safe, successful field courses and research trips. It includes guidance on planning, training, incident response, risk assessment, effective communication, campus resources, and common field hazards.
Field work should be carefully planned prior to departure to the field site(s)d. Due to the constantly changing conditions of field research, the emphasis on proper training and preparedness is of utmost importance for all people entering the field. All fieldwork warrants pre-trip training regarding foreseen hazards, appropriate precautions, communication options, and emergency procedures.
Training
EHSRM offers online training that meet regulatory and policy requirements that support the safety culture of UTRGV. Visit the EHSRM Training page for information. The Pre-Trip Field Operations Safety training is located on Blackboard.
