Environmental Protection

Image of chemical bottles to be disposed. The EHSRM Environmental Protection Program is charged with ensuring that all of the institution’s environmental releases are handled in a manner that is not harmful to the environment and that is compliant with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) rules and regulations. Environmental releases are categorized into the following:

  1. Regulated waste releases
  2. Water releases

It is incumbent upon members of the UTRGV community to be familiar with the rules and regulation applicable to any type of environmental releases generated from their respective activities whether in a facilities, office or laboratory environment. EHSRM is charged with helping with the characterization and proper disposal of any waste streams.

Hazardous Waste Container with label. All hazardous (chemical, biological, radioactive and universal waste streams are required to be disposed of through the Department of Environmental Health Safety and Risk Management’s Environmental Protection Program.
