The Bilingual Education Student Organization (BESO) was created in 1990 to advocate for bilingualism and biculturalism throughout the Rio Grande Valley by positively impacting surrounding schools and communities. BESO is inclusive of students, staff, and faculty across UTRGV’s Edinburg, Brownsville, and Rio Grande City locations.
During weekly meetings and social events, BESO members can exchange ideas, share practices, and disseminate information related to bilingual education. These gatherings foster the development of support groups and provide a platform for staying up to date with the latest research in the field. Additionally, members can establish valuable connections with like-minded individuals who share bilingual and bicultural goals. BESO meetings often feature guest speakers and community leaders with professional affiliations or expertise in bilingual education within our community.
BESO members actively participate in a wide range of social, professional, and volunteer activities that cater to students across various majors, all with a shared interest in bilingualism. Throughout the semester, BESO organizes weekly fundraisers such as "elote en vaso," "chicharrones preparados," and "aguas frescas" that are not only delicious but also contribute to the advancement of professional development. The funds raised through these events help cover the costs associated with attending leadership conferences and workshops, enabling members to gain valuable insights and enhance their skills in the field.
