Drivers Safety Training Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Will I receive a certificate of completion for this training?
Although you can log in to Blackboard at any time to view your completion date, you may request a certificate from Michelle Guglielmo: Michelle.Guglielmo@utrgv.edu, 665-7256.
  2. Do I have to report the violation even though I was in my own car and wasn’t conducting
    university business at the time?
Yes. Your record will be affected by that violation. Therefore, the University must ensure that your record has not fallen below the 3 points allowable to drive a University vehicle.
  3. Is this training approved for traffic ticket dismissal or insurance discounts in Texas?
No. You may want to look into websites like DefensiveDriving.com or IDriveSafely.com for courses that are approved for those purposes. (They are about 6 hours in length and cost a minimum of $25.00.)
  4. Do I need to carry a hard copy of my insurance card or will an electronic image from my phone suffice?
You need a physical insurance card as provided by your insurance company. (Some states are starting to allow digital copies but Texas is not one of them.)
  5. How can I tell whether the paved pathways on campus are considered roads or parking lots?
If a vehicle can back up into your direct line of travel, go the appropriate speed of 10 mph or less regardless of the classification of road or parking lot.
  6. How often are UTRGV vehicles inspected and who processes the Purchase Orders for that maintenance?
Every 4 months. Lorenzo Guzman, Vehicle Services Coordinator.
  7. Who do I contact in order to receive the additional “12 and 15 Passenger Van Training”?
    Celia Saenz: EEHSRM 1.111, Celia.Saenz@utrgv.edu, 665-2902.
  8. Can I be authorized to drive with an out-of-state Drivers License?
Yes, 3 years of your driving history will be evaluated regardless of where you’ve lived. For Example: 2 years history from Florida + 1 year history from Kansas. You have 30 days from the date of your move to update your address with the Texas Department of Public Safety and 90 days to register your vehicle. Good luck with the DMV!
  9. Is there anything else I need to do besides the training?
Yes. You need to submit a Driver Record Approval form to Environmental Health, Safety and Risk Management at EHSRM@utrgv.edu (one time submission) as outlined in the Driver Safety training presentation.

Would you like to add a question? Contact Michelle at 665-7256. Thank you.
