Respiratory Fit Test Program: Instructions

Important Fit Testing Rules:

  1. Each person being tested needs to bring the model/size of mask they plan on wearing or make arrangements to have it made available to EHSRM personnel before testing begins. Our office will provide BYD Care DE2322 N95 masks. It is recommended that you wear a mask when not being fit tested.
  2. The medical questionnaire form must be approved by a physician prior to your fit test appointment. Email your completed form (leave only section B blank) at least 3 business days in advance of your appointment date to EHSRM@utrgv.edu.
  3. Absolutely no facial hair, not even stubble is allowed where the mask sits on the face. EHSRM staff will not provide shaving supplies so be sure to shave at home the same morning as your appointment date so that you are clean shaven.
  4. Do not wear make-up or anything that might cause the mask to become soiled or to slip on the face.
  5. No eating, drinking, or smoking 15 minutes before testing including gum and mouth wash, etc. Plain water is okay.
  6. Please watch the following OSHA Respirator Safety Video before you arrive to the fit testing site: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tzpz5fko-fg
  7. Bring your own water bottle (filled with plain water only; no flavors or carbonation) to rinse your mouth of the testing solution after the sensitivity test.
  8. If you plan on wearing eye glasses with your mask, bring them to the appointment so the frames may be tested for compatibility with the mask.
  9. Bring a medium sized paper bag to store the mask you are fit tested on.
