Accreditation

Welcome to The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine (UTRGV SOM) Accreditation website. This website is a hub to help you stay current on new developments, share your feedback, and gain an understanding of how the overall process affects you as a student, faculty, resident, or staff member.

The UTRGV School of Medicine was granted provisional accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) on June 21, 2021. Achieving full accreditation from the LCME is a high priority for the School of Medicine and critical to its future and its educational mission to train the next generation of physicians in the RGV and beyond.

The LCME accreditation process involves collection and review of data and policies touching every aspect of SOM’s operation, infrastructure, and curriculum, to ensure our practices meet the 12 standards related to the function and structure of a medical school as defined by the LCME. Important to this effort is an in-depth assessment of our level of compliance in each area.

In preparation for our full site visit in February 2023, SOM administrators, faculty, residents, staff and students have been assigned to taskforces, committees, and CQI teams and are working diligently on the assessment, completing the Data Collection Instrument (DCI), reviewing data, policies, and procedures, and recommending and making improvements to enhance the SOM.

As we proceed, we will need the full engagement of the entire SOM community. I am excited about the opportunities that lay ahead as we work together in preparation for our site visit. I invite you to join us in our efforts to achieve full accreditation, browse our website, contact us with your feedback and ideas, and check back for updates and related LCME news. Our LCME Survey Visit for Full Accreditation is scheduled for the 2022-23 academic year.

Sincerely,

Michael B. Hocker, MD, MHS
Dean, UTRGV School of Medicine
