Evolving Through Time
At The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Office for Sustainability, the institutionalization of sustainability across campuses opens the door to curiosity and sustainable discovery to transform the future of UTRGV.
It’s not a trend…it’s a promise.
Since 2017, we have been proudly recognized with a Gold Rating from the AASHE STARS program, recognizing our leadership and forward promise of spreading the knowledge of sustainability to students, across the RGV, and our planet.
UTRGV is among the first UT systems to establish an Office for Sustainability (OFS). Our mission: plant the seed of sustainable development into the fabric of campus life. Since then, we have maintained our promise to foster a campus where sustainability is not just a term—it’s part of who we are.
The seed has grown into a thriving collaboration between programs, research, and student leadership.
To shape our decision-making process, events on campus, and incoming future.
Environmental: Preserving today’s Earth, empowering tomorrow’s life
Social: Building communities where everyone thrives, now and into the future
Economic: Fueling progress through innovation, efficiency, and lasting prosperity
Our commitment is here to stay with our 10-year Sustainability Campus Action Plan that mentions measurable goals and accountability mechanisms.
- Project Sin Fronteras and the International Center for Sustainability Across the Curriculum (ICSAC) are current projects of institutionalization in academic disciplines.
- UTRGV’s support toward student-led research and community-engaged scholarship aligned with our 3 pillars of sustainability.
- Reducing environmental footprint on campus through energy efficiency upgrades, water conservation systems, sustainable transportation initiatives, native landscaping, etc.
OFS envisions a future where sustainability represents a core value embedded into every corner of university life.
