In January 2015, United Health Foundation awarded the UTRGV School of Medicine a three-year, $2.88 million grant to establish the Center for Colonia Integrated Care Program: VIDAS (Valley Interprofessional Development and Services). The initiative supported the development of an integrated, interprofessional model to improve health care delivery for communities experiencing barriers to care.
As part of the grant, the UTRGV School of Medicine purchased UniMóvil, a mobile health clinic designed to bring primary and preventive care to Rio Grande Valley communities where residents face barriers to accessing health care. UniMóvil also provides community-based training and service opportunities for UTRGV medical students, residents, and students enrolled in other health professions programs.
UTRGV School of Medicine faculty, medical residents, and other UTRGV-affiliated health care professionals staff the 40-foot mobile clinic, which includes two examination rooms, a laboratory, a restroom, and diagnostic equipment. UniMóvil began operating in summer 2016 and continues to expand access to care throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
UniMóvil has also supported emergency response efforts. In September 2017, a UTRGV School of Medicine health care team traveled with UniMóvil to Houston and provided care to approximately 100 people affected by Hurricane Harvey.
