Why UTeach?

2011 Why UTeach? from The UTeach Institute on Vimeo.

Overview

The UTeach RGV program allows you to complete a bachelor's degree in science or mathematics in four (4) years, while simultaneously earning a secondary teacher certification. You do not have to choose between your science or mathematics major and teaching. You can do both!

Though the program is streamlined, the curriculum is rigorous and specifically designed for future science and mathematics teachers. However, if you choose not to pursue a teaching career after graduation, you are prepared to seek other types of employment in your field or to apply to graduate school.

UTeach teachers are in demand. UTeach graduates are highly sought after by the school districts where they have completed their field experiences. Their strong content knowledge and experience with implementing inquiry- and project-based instructional methods make them highly desirable first-year teachers.

Special Features

  • The first course, UTCH 1101, offers you the opportunity to "try out" teaching. In this one-hour course, you will learn to teach three inquiry-based lessons with a partner in a local elementary school using the 5E teaching model. You will be assisted throughout the course by your UTeach instructors and mentored by a highly qualified classroom teacher.
  • Your first UTeach instructors are called master teachers. They are exemplary teachers who formerly taught science or mathematics in the public schools. They will teach you, coach you, mentor you, observe you in the schools as you learn to teach, and supervise your field experiences. They serve as the bridge between the UTeach program and the local public schools. Master Teachers
  • Each campus has an experienced UTeach advisor, who will help keep you on track with your degree plan, help you understand state certification requirements, and encourage you to meet the deadlines for admission to teacher education and to clinical teaching (apprentice teaching). UTeach Advisors
  • There are 10 UTeach courses, which normally require five semesters (fall and spring) to complete. Courses These courses are embedded in the science and mathematics degree plans that incorporate teacher certification. Degree Plans
  • UTeach faculty and staff provide a community of support for the students in the program and the students, in turn, support each other. It is common to see UTeach students tutoring or coaching each other in the student workrooms.
  • UTeach RGV has an active student organization with two chapters. Members participate in campus and community activities.
  • UTeach has a national reputation. Graduates of UTeach programs are highly sought after by local, state, and out-of-state school districts.
  • UTeach continues to support its graduates during their first two years of teaching.
