History
UTeach began at The University of Texas at Austin in 1997 as a student-focused way to recruit STEM majors and prepare them to become teachers.
Faculty with expertise in STEM fields, in STEM teaching and learning, and in the history of science and mathematics worked alongside master teacher practitioners (UTeach clinical faculty) to design a program emphasizing a deep understanding of STEM content, practices, and pedagogy, and strong connections between theory and practice.
In its first decade, UTeach was so successful at significantly increasing the number of certified STEM teacher graduates at UT Austin that it began receiving inquiries from other universities.
The UTeach Institute was established in 2006 both to support replication of UTeach at universities across the United States and to lead efforts toward continuous improvement of the UTeach model.
The Development of UTeach in the Rio Grande Valley
The success of UTeach RGV is the legacy of the vision and leadership provided by administrators at The University of Texas Brownsville and The University of Texas-Pan American prior to the merger of the two institutions in September 2015 and by administrators at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley who have supported the transition of the program from its grant status to an institutionally funded program in the College of Sciences beginning in September 2017.
