FAQ for University Testing Services

What are your business hours?

Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Do I have to be enrolled at UTRGV to test?

No. Anyone interested in testing can come to our office and take an exam. Keep in mind that both ACT On Campus and Institutional TOEFL exam results stay at UTRGV – you are not able to transfer ACT On Campus or Institutional TOEFL exam results to another institution or agency.

Can I pay the exam fees with cash ?

No.  All payments must be made electronically on our website.

Can I use a calculator?

Calculators are permitted but not necessary for some exams. All questions can be worked out without the use of a calculator. Scientific calculators are permitted in the SAT, ACT-National and ACT On Campus exams only. A list of approved calculators can be found on their respective websites. Test specific policies will apply since it varies from test to test.

When can I register for an exam?

Registration for all exams is on a first-come-first-serve basis. Seating is limited and you are encouraged to register as soon as possible. The registration deadline is always a week before exam date – depending on availability for Institutional Exams only. Registration deadlines for national and state exams can be found at their respective websites.

Are standbys allowed on the day of the exam?

Standbys are allowed on the day of the exam but are not guaranteed a seat. It is to your advantage to come in as early as possible on the day of the exam. Standby's for all institutional exams such as, ACT On Campus, and CLEP must report their respective locations.  For example, if you signed up for a Brownsville test, you must travel to the Brownsville testing site, same rule applies for the Edinburg location.
ACT On Campus examinees must bring the following items on the day of the exam:
  • Valid current photo ID (i.e. drivers license, passport and student ID)
  • Scientific or graphic calculator is allowed but not necessary (see act.org for approved calculators).
Institutional TOEFL examinees must bring the following items on the day of the exam:
  • Valid photo ID (i.e. non-U.S. Citizens must bring valid current passport or laser border crosser (B1/B2) visa. U.S. Citizens must bring a valid drivers license or passport card.
CLEP examinees must bring the following items on the day of the exam
  • Valid photo ID (i.e. drivers license, passport)
  • CLEP Ticket ID Number

What do I need to bring with me?

Each test will have their specific authorization, list as follows:

CLEP – printed ticket (PDF photo is acceptable) and a non-expired government ID in which the last name must match to the ticket.

TSIA2 – student or non-expired government ID along with the pre-assessment, if you have taken the TSIA2 before you will not require a pre-assessment as that document pertains only to first time test takers.

WebCAPE – student ID

HESI – must know your evolve username & password and your non-expired government ID or student ID.

TCFP – admission ticket and a non-expired government ID.

Pearson – some Pearson exams require 2 forms of ID, and others require 1 form of ID. In the case that you need 2 ID’s you will be required to bring a non-expired government ID and a 2nd ID in which matches exactly to your government ID (photo not required). If your exam requires 1 ID, bring your non-expired government ID.

When will I get my scores?

Depending on the test, most will receive a paper copy of the results. If you are unsure whether you will receive one or not you may ask the testing specialist after you have finished your exam.

Can I bring my cell phone?

It is preferred that you do not bring a cell phone however, we do have small secure storage lockers to place your personal items.  If in the case you do bring your cell phone, while you are taking your exam you must have the phone powered off – no exceptions.  Additionally, we are not responsible for lost or stolen items.

Can I bring bottled water or food?

No. Unfortunately, no personal items including food or drinks are allowed in the testing room.

Do I need a parking permit?

Yes, parking permits are required but will provided to you when you check in for your exam.

What happens if I arrive late?

It is very important to arrive on time. Depending on specific test policies, arrivals between 15-30 minutes after your appointment will be subject to a reschedule.

Is there a dress code?

No. We recommend wearing something comfortable and with the fewest pockets. A light sweater is allowed however, caps and non-religious headwear is not permitted.

Are refunds allowed?

No. Test fees are non-refundable and non-transferable, if you are unable to come in it is possible to have your test rescheduled but not always a guarantee.

What if I lost my test scores?

All institutional test scores can be obtained at the P-16 Outreach & Testing Services Offices.

Visit: https://www.utrgv.edu/p16/_files/documents/testing/test-score-retrivea_files/documents/test-score-retrieval-request.pdfl-request.pdf and fill out the document in its entirety. Once that is filled out you can drop the document off at our location or email it to us at testing@utrgv.edu - It takes 24 hours to process the request.

For national tests, please check with their corresponding bulletin or website.

What placement test(s) do I need to take?

Entering freshman and transfer students should contact the office of Undergraduate Admissions, 888-882-4026, Academic Services Bldg., to determine which test(s) you should take.
Current UTRGV students should contact the Academic Advising Center, (956) 665-7120, or your academic advisor to determine which test(s) you should take.

Can I reschedule my exam?

While it is best to keep your original scheduled exam, some exams may be rescheduled but not always a guarantee.

What precautions are you taking for COVID-19?

We are taking all the necessary precautions to keep a clean and safe environment for our test takers. As required by the university, county/state and federal mandates.
