The Leadership Institute serves as the cornerstone for all leadership development initiatives at UTRGV, providing a structured pathway for leaders at every level to grow and excel. Professional development opportunities are designed for managers and supervisors including aspiring supervisors to enhance existing skills and to develop best practices to promote excellence, effectiveness, and efficiencies.

Overview

Leadership Institute's structure:

  • Steps Leading Up to the Building: The steps symbolize "Entry Points," representing various programs and offerings that introduce employees to progressive stages of leadership development, beginning with UTRGV’s Leadership Competency Model.
  • Foundation (Base of the Building): This level represents the core competencies and initial assessments that support leaders in self-awareness and development. Here, HR Essentials ensures leaders understand key HR processes and policies, while assessments like EQ-i 2.0 and DISC help leaders recognize their strengths and areas for growth.
  • Columns (Pillars of Leadership Development): Each column reflects a pillar of growth:
    • Foundational Leadership Training: Provides initial leadership skills, with future offerings like the New Leader Academy.
    • Senior/Advanced Leadership Development: Focuses on preparing leaders for strategic, high-level roles through programs like the Advanced Leadership Academy.
    • Customized Learning Paths: Tailors development through consultation and custom content creation – self-paced and live.
    • Mentorship: Cultivates leadership skills, fosters mentor-mentee relationships, and supports professional growth.
    • Coaching @ UTRGV: Personalized leadership coaching sessions offer one-on-one growth and reflective practice.
  • Entablature (Above the Columns): This section, called Integrated Development Pathways, illustrates how each leadership element complements the others, creating a cohesive framework for growth.
  • Pediment (Triangle Top of the Building): Representing the Leadership Institute itself, this overarching section encompasses all facets of UTRGV’s leadership development.

Leadership Institute Components

We are excited to announce upcoming leadership content designed specifically for new and emerging leaders at UTRGV. We are focusing on foundational leadership skills and strategies to help new leaders thrive in their roles. Below is a list of current and upcoming leadership resources: 

  • HR Essentials Leader Series - offered on a semester basis. 

Join us for selected or all parts of this series. Register via the UTRGV training portal. Spring 2025 sessions are now available.  

  • Advanced Leadership Academy 

A key leadership development offering designed to empower and further develop leaders across our university. This new program builds on the previously offered Supervisor Excellence Series, now offering an enhanced and more comprehensive leadership development experience designed to meet the evolving needs of our more experienced leaders. 

The Advanced Leadership Academy is a 6-month in-person cohort program that will help participants develop critical leadership skills, connect with UTRGV senior leaders, and learn from subject matter experts. The program focuses on UTRGV’s Leadership Competency Model and covers the core areas of Leads Self, Leads Others, and Delivers Results

  • Customized advanced leadership development programming

In Spring 2024, we launched Mentoring U, a 6-month leadership mentoring program bringing together 27 mentor-mentee pairs to strengthen UTRGV’s leadership pipeline. Each mentee is matched with a seasoned leader from across the university, offering guidance, insights, and real-world strategies. 

Our second cohort will start in April 2025. Be on the lookout for a call for mentors and mentees soon. 

We have launched our internal coaching program and are excited to now offer coaching to Faculty & Staff by our six (6) certified in-house leadership coaches (in addition to previously existing coaching offerings through external coaching partners). We currently offer and help facilitate the following assessments*:

  • EQ-i 2.0: Measures emotional intelligence competencies to support personal and leadership development. Available with focuses on Executive Leadership, Higher Education, Workplace, and Student. 
  • DISC Personality Profile: Assesses behavioral styles to enhance communication, collaboration, and productivity. 
  • E-Colors Personality Profile: Identifies individual personality tendencies to improve self-awareness, communication, teamwork, and decision-making. 
  • Leadership Style Inventory: Identifies leadership tendencies and provides actionable insights for growth. 
  • StrengthsFinder: Helps individuals and teams discover and leverage their top strengths. 

We also offer flexible options for designing custom assessments in-house tailored to the organization's/department's specific needs. Examples include: climate pulse surveys, team performance diagnostics, change readiness assessments, development needs assessments (identifying specific opportunities for growth and improvement within your team). 

Interested to offer an assessment not listed here? Please email us so we can better understand your needs and provide approriate guidance. We are constantly adding new assessments and certifications and are looking forward to your feedback on additional assessments that would supplement and enhance our current offerings. 

*While we don't charge for our internal HR OD&T services and training offerings, some assessments may come at an additional cost to requesting departmens. Please reach out to us for more information.
