Reinstatement Appeal
You must remain in good academic standing to continue in your graduate program and to be eligible for graduation. You are expected to maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Some programs may require a higher GPA or specific grades in certain courses, so be sure to review your program’s handbook for details.
Please visit the graduate catalog to view the complete Graduate Student Standing and Probation policy.
Academic Suspension
Academic suspension usually occurs when academic requirements are not met, such as failing to earn a 3.0 GPA after a warning or probation period. If you violate the terms of your suspension or university policies during this time, additional disciplinary action may be taken, including dismissal.
While on suspension, you are not allowed to register for classes. If you registered before the suspension took effect, you will be dropped from all courses. If you are a master’s student suspended after earning an “F” grade, you must sit out one term (semester or module). If you are a doctoral student suspended after earning an “F” grade, you must sit out one long term (fall or spring semester).
During your suspension, you may submit an appeal for reinstatement, use campus resources that do not require enrollment, and complete any incomplete coursework, provided you made prior arrangements with your instructor.
Appeal for Reinstatement
If you are suspended, you will be blocked from registering and dropped from future terms. To remove the registration hold, you must submit an appeal for reinstatement and have it approved.
Review Process
Your appeal will be reviewed in the following order:
Director of the Graduate Program or Graduate Program Coordinator
Dean (or Dean’s designee) of the Academic College
Dean (or Dean’s designee) of the Graduate College
The decision made by the Dean of the Graduate College is final. If your appeal is approved, you will be reinstated, your registration hold will be lifted, and you may continue in your program under any conditions set by the Graduate College Dean. You must meet these conditions each term until you return to good academic standing.
If your appeal is denied, you will be dismissed from the program.
Because appeals require careful review, the process may take between two and eight weeks.
Applying to Another Program While on Suspension
If you are dismissed or suspended from a graduate program and wish to apply to a different graduate program, the admitting program must submit the Lift Enrollment Hold Form on your behalf. Reach to the program coordinator for assistance. Apply to a new graduate program at utrgv.edu/gradapply
