Engineering Summer Program Information
Due to an overwhelming demand to cater to high school students, the University Transportation Center for Railway Safety (UTCRS) will be hosting a Transportation Engineering Summer Enrichment Program (TESEP) to increase awareness of careers in transportation engineering for incoming 9th through 12th grade students. This Program promotes science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education, with a focus on railway safety. This Program is made possible by grant activities within the University Transportation Center for Railway Safety (UTCRS), funded by the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology, U.S. Department of Transportation, from UTC Program grant: DTRT13-G-UTC59, and an Engineering Summer Programs grant funded by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB).
The program is one-week long (40 hours of learning activities), Monday June 26, 2017 to Friday June 30, 2017 starting from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Students will be provided with lunch every day of the camp. This special program will only be offered during this one week.
Students will not only have the opportunity to program and reconfigure Lego Mindstorm Robots, but will also participate in a plethora of other interactive, hands-on activities for one week in which the various modes of transportation engineering, with a focus on railway safety, will be highlighted. The students will be exposed to current research projects, in progress, as a means of stimulating their interest in engineering and as a potential career path. The students will learn how to program specialized sensors, and validate their designs through testing and experimentation. They will also have the opportunity to interact with some faculty members from the College of Engineering and Computer Science. Certified RET teachers and university faculty will serve as instructors. Current UTRGV engineering students will also be available to mentor students by sharing their experiences and knowledge in the field.
This camp will be held on the Edinburg Campus of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV), located at 1201 W. University Drive, Edinburg, TX 78539. Please keep in mind that no transportation services are provided; therefore, the students will need to report to the Engineering Building Lobby no later than 8:00 am. Please refer to the UTRGV campus map. The activities will begin promptly at 8:00 a.m.; therefore, students need to be present at the UTRGV Edinburg Engineering Building Lobby before 8 a.m.
