Appointment of Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs

Dear Campus Community:
After careful consideration of both internal and external candidates and after consultation with several campus groups, I am pleased to announce that Dr. Patricia Alvarez McHatton has been appointed interim vice president for Academic Affairs, effective August 1.
Dr. McHatton joined UTRGV in 2015 as dean of the College of Education and P-16 Integration. She has worked in higher education since 2004, and before joining UTRGV, served as associate dean for Teacher Education at the University of Missouri at Kansas City. She obtained her bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees from the University of South Florida in Tampa.
“I am extremely excited for the opportunity to serve in this interim role, and I thank President Bailey for his confidence in me,” Dr. McHatton said. “This is a wonderful opportunity to expand my interactions and collaborations with our outstanding students, faculty, and staff.”
As I mentioned in my memo on July 7, we are committed to moving quickly to find a permanent replacement for Dr. Havidán Rodríguez. Now that an interim is in place, the next steps are to appoint a search committee by the end of August, and begin a national search shortly thereafter.
