How to Apply

Step 1: All BSN applicants must Apply or Reapply to UTRGV via ApplyTexas.org:

All School of Nursing BSN applicants must apply or reapply to UTRGV via applytexas.org and be accepted to the university before applying to the BSN Program.  We recommend applying to UTRGV and submitting your Official Transcripts to UTRGV Undergraduate Admissions at least six weeks before the cycle opens.   You must ensure that you have your UTRGV email address before proceeding to step 2.

For more information about how to apply to UTRGV as a Freshman, Transfer, International, 2nd degree student, etc. see Undergraduate Admissions.

  • Currently enrolled students at UTRGV (who have not earned their first bachelor’s degree or who will not be graduating before starting a BSN nursing program):

Go to step 2 if your UTRGV application is up to date.

  • Currently enrolled UTRGV students in their last term, can reapply during their last term after applying for graduation.  You do not need to wait until you graduate to reapply.
  • New students: visit Undergraduate Admissions and review “How to Apply” to UTRGV.
  • Re-admit students: you are a re-admit applicant if you are a former UTRGV or UT Pan American/UTB/TSC student still seeking your first bachelor's degree, even if you have enrolled at another college or university since you last attended UTRGV or UTPA/UTB/TSC.  Visit Undergraduate Admissions and review “How to Re-apply” to UTRGV.
  • Second Degree Students (those with a bachelor’s degree):  if you previously graduated with a bachelor’s degree, review the admissions process for “Second Degree Students” and how to pursue a second bachelor’s degree.   Important:  select BSN-Nursing (2nd Degree) on ApplyTexas.

Step 2: Generic BSN and RN to BSN: Apply to the UTRGV School of Nursing Via TK20

  • After completing your UTRGV application and being accepted to UTRGV, complete and submit your School of Nursing Application via TK20 (Generic BSN and RN to BSN applicants only).
  • BSN Generic and RN to BSN applicants can log in to UTRGV TK20 once the cycle is open, TK 20 will be activated and available for you to apply.
    • Use your UTRGV sign-on credentials (your UTRGV email and password).
    • If your UTRGV sign-on credentials do not work, create an applicant account in TK20 using your  email by clicking Admissions and then “Click here to create your account.”.
    • See detailed TK20 instructions for creating a TK20 account

Step 2: 2nd Degree BSN Apply to UTRGV School of Nursing via NursingCAS

Nursing CAS Apply Now

  • 2nd Degree BSN applicants only utilize the NursingCAS application service.
  • Important:  UTRGV School of Nursing requires that you also submit a set of official transcripts to NursingCAS, including your Official UTRGV transcript before the cycle closes from every college or university that you ever attended.  Electronic submission is recommended. See NursingCAS Transcript Submission instructions.
  • There is a $60 application fee for your first application and $45 for additional applications you submit during the same NursingCAS cycle. For more fee information, see NursingCAS.  NursingCAS also offer a limited number of fee waivers. This is not a UTRGV fee waiver program, so contact NursingCAS if you have any questions.
  • UTRGV School of Nursing requires applicants to complete their full transcript entry on the application. You will need to enter all of your coursework; some may require that you enter only prerequisite coursework. Read the full instructions on completing Transcript Entry in the Applicant Help Center.

NursingCAS Application Status:

Your application and materials must have a “complete” (all materials received and pending verification) or “verified” status by NursingCAS for the UTRGV School of Nursing to review your application.

  • It is the applicant’s responsibility to monitor the status of their applications and application materials regularly in NursingCAS. Verified status is required to have your application processed and considered.
  • NursingCAS does NOT notify applicants if applications are incomplete or if documents are missing.
  • Only applications and application materials with a "complete" or "verified" status by the deadline are reviewed by UTRGV School of Nursing. Verification status must be received for an application to be processed.  It takes approximately 10 business days after receiving your Official Transcripts and accurately completing your course entries on your application for NursingCAS to provide the Verified status.
    • Applicants must meet UTRGV’s School of Nursing’s minimum application criteria requirements for applications to be considered and ranked by the School of Nursing even if they are marked Complete or Verified by NursingCAS.
  • Contact NursingCAS if you have any questions related to your Verification status.
  • For more information on application status, please visit the NursingCAS’ Applicant Help Center.

Step 3: All BSN Applicants must Submit Official Transcripts to UTRGV for Evaluation:

  • To determine your eligibility to apply to the BSN program, you must ensure that all your official transcripts have been submitted for each college or university you attended where you earned any of the required 63 credits prerequisite and core coursework to Undergraduate Admissions.
  • Important: Transcript notations on a transcript cannot be utilized to determine if your transcripts transfer to UTRGV or if you meet the requirements for the BSN program.  Thus, you must submit the Official Transcripts from the institution where you earned your credit. Undergraduate Admissions will evaluate your credits for transfer to UTRGV.
  • Important: Submission of all your Official Transcripts to UTRGV Undergraduate Admissions is crucial to determine if you are missing any transcripts or to determine if you may need any substitutions for any of the 63 required course credits. Unofficial transcripts are not evaluated by Undergraduate Admissions. See BSN Roadmap for 63 credits in prerequisites.
  • Submit any Official Credit By Examination scores as per the Undergraduate Admissions instructions.
  • UTRGV does not accept credit from Study.com.

Step 4: All BSN Generic and 2nd BSN degree Applicants must upload and submit HESI Scores and Retests Score Sheets before the cycle closes.

  • All School of Nursing applicants must ensure that all required information and documentation, including valid HESI scores (Grammar, Vocabulary, Reading Comprehension, Math, Anatomy and Physiology, and Critical Thinking), are uploaded and submitted to the application system before the application cycle closes or your application will be incomplete.

Note: Critical Thinking is on a separate score sheet.

  • All applicants must read the HESI FAQs  and HESI Requirements and Information for UTRGV School of Nursing’s HESI requirements. For example,
    • There is a 3-week waiting period before you can retest for HESI. Applicants should plan accordingly if they need to retest while the application cycle is still open.
    • HESI scores must be submitted before the cycle closes as late HESI scores are not accepted.
    • The HESI exam may not be taken more than twice in an academic year (September 1 through August 31).
