Your exciting and challenging journey into the UTRGV School of Nursing (SON) is about to begin. Orientation is the first step in shaping you into a compassionate, skilled, and knowledgeable nurse.
Orientation is the foundation of your nursing journey—where your commitment to learning, service, and professionalism begins to take shape! We will guide and support you, ensuring you are equipped with the tools, resources, and confidence to start strong and succeed in the program. This is your opportunity to connect with faculty, meet your peers, and prepare for both the academic and clinical experiences that lie ahead.

New Student Orientation Schedule:
New students will receive am email (check your UTRGV email)from the School of Nursing before their first semester indicating the date, time, and place of their orientation.
Orientation is mandatory for all incoming BSN Generic and 2nd Degree Nursing students. Orientation usually occurs about one month before the new semester. The exact place, date, and time will be announced via your UTRGV email.
Overview of Topics:
Sessions are led by the BSN Program Director, Program Coordinators, and faculty.
- Academic Preparation & Requirements: Strategies to excel in coursework and meet program expectations.
- Clinical Readiness: Introduction to skills, expectations, and success in clinical settings.
- Student Resources: Mentoring, tutoring, financial aid, counseling, simulation labs, and more.
- Professionalism & Policies: Student handbook and policies, including information on attendance, minimum course grades, dress code, and conduct expectations.
What to Wear and Bring
- Recommended attire is business casual, unless otherwise instructed via email.
- Notebook or laptop for notes
- Any required documents requested by the School of Nursing
Activities
- If orientation is on campus, students may receive tours of skills labs, simulation labs, and classrooms
- Q&A sessions with faculty and staff
- Distribution of important student materials and documents
Tips for Success
- If held in person, arrive at least 15 minutes before the start time
- If held online, connect to the meeting about 15 minutes before it starts to ensure you do not encounter any technical difficulties
- Students will sign in and attendance will be taken and monitored
- Use orientation to connect with classmates and faculty
- Ask questions about clinical schedules, deadlines, and support services
