Students will be evaluated for admission based on space availability after being rank-ordered using the total points obtained from the following criteria:

A. GPA for Science Courses - 40%

  • BIOL 2401 Anatomy and Physiology
  • BIOL 2402 Anatomy and Physiology II
  • CHEM 1311 General Chemistry I and CHEM 1111 General Chemistry Lab I
  • CLSC 2429 Clinical Microbiology
B. GPA for Strategic Courses - 20%
  • MATH 1342 Elementary Statistical Methods or MATH 1343 Introduction to Biostatistics
  • PSYC 2301 Introduction to Psychology
  • PSYC 2314 Psychology of Lifespan
  • SOCI 1301 Introduction to Sociology or ANTH 2351 Introduction to Cultural Anthropology

C. HESI A2 Cumulative Score - 20% (includes Grammar, Vocabulary, Reading Comprehension, Math, and Anatomy and Physiology)

D. HESI A2 Critical Thinking Score - 20%

The above are “application eligibility” courses and they must be completed before the application cycle closes.   This will also enable applicants to be ranked.

Applications will be marked incomplete if they are missing one or more of the above course or valid HESI requirements and will not be considered or ranked. However, if a any prerequisite or “application eligibility” course above is in progress at the time of application but is completed before the selection committee meets to make acceptance decisions, a secondary courtesy review may be provided (see courtesy review below for more details).

Calculating GPAs:

Applicants may utilize the UTRGV GPA Calculator to determine their Science and Strategic GPAs. An applicant’s overall GPA is not considered.  However, Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA for all required 63 hours in prerequisites. See the appropriate BSN Roadmap.

Secondary: Courtesy Review of Courses in Progress:

The courses above are required to be completed at the time of application as per the “Application Eligibility” requirements.  However, if any course(s) above is in progress when your application is submitted but will be completed before the committee reviews applications, we will provide a courtesy secondary review of your unofficial transcript(s) you provide to the School of Nursing reflecting successful completion of the course(s).

To provide a courtesy review, an applicant must order an Official Transcript from other institutions to be sent to UTRGV Undergraduate Admissions for official evaluation as soon as the course is completed.  Also, applicants must send an unofficial transcript to the School of Nursing via email schoolofnursing@utrgv.edu.

These transcripts must be submitted before the selection committee meets to select candidates. The scheduled date for emailing decision letters can be found under 'When and How to Apply.' The Committee typically meets one to two weeks before the letters are emailed.  The committee meeting dates are subject to change and a courtesy secondary review is not guaranteed.

Review the Application Eligibility and Admission Requirements:

In addition to reviewing how each applicant ranks, the selection committee reviews if applicants meet the Applicant Eligibility requirements.  See Application Eligibility and Admission Requirements in the UTRGV Undergraduate College Catalog.  The Generic and 2nd Degree BSN Applicant Checklist is also a helpful tool.

The above information is subject to change and any updates will be posted on the School of Nursing’s webpage.
