Besteiro Middle School science teacher wins top honors at HESTEC

As a high school student, Claudia Mar was impressed by a teacher who led a biology class in the morning and cared for patients as a doctor the rest of the day.

Now a Besteiro Middle School science teacher and former medical researcher, Mar followed a similar path. She was recognized as the HESTEC Teacher of the Year during Educator Day on Oct. 5.

With the sweep of a green starting flag, Brownsville Mayor Tony Martinez gave the signal that officially revved up the inaugural HESTEC GreenpowerUSA South Texas Electric Car Competition on Saturday at the Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport.

Thirty-one student teams in three categories vied to see whose electric car traveled the furthest distance around a race track in either 60 minutes or 90 minutes. It was the first event of its kind in Texas.

BROWNSVILLE — With the sweep of a green starting flag, Mayor Tony Martinez gave the signal that officially revved up the inaugural HESTEC GreenpowerUSA South Texas Electric Car Competition on Saturday at the Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport.

Electric cars to race on Saturday

Thirty-two teams of middle, high school and college students from across South Texas will converge this weekend on the Brownsville-South Padre Island International Airport for the first HESTEC Green Power USA South Texas Electric Car Competition.

An estimated 500 to 600 student-built F-24 kit cars are expected to compete in three races — middle school,high school,and high school-college combined — starting at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the airport, 100 S. Vermillion Road in Brownsville. Opening ceremonies are at 11:30a.m. The awards ceremony is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. The events are free and the public is encouraged to attend.

Reading Rock Stars return to Morningside Elementary

The students knew they were in for a treat one recent morning in the library at Morningside Elementary School: the Reading Rock Stars were back in town.

Morningside is in the final year of a three-year Reading Rock Stars grant from the Texas Book Festival. The grant has brought notable children’s book authors, and this year an illustrator, to the school to read their books to the children and then give them each a signed copy.

SAN BENITO — Call them the San Benito Green Hounds.

Two low, red and green electric cars are decorated with decals of a picture of a green greyhound.

Student members of the San Benito High School GreenPower USA Electric Car team are heading to Alabama to take part in the Toyota-Jaguar Classic Electric Car Competition.

FESTIBA panels illustrate comics as literature

EDINBURG - When one thinks of resources to improve literacy, comics might not immediately come to mind. There is more to literacy, however, than classic novels. The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley is on to that.

On day two of the 12th annual FESTIBA celebration, six academic sessions discussing comics as literature and art were hosted inside the Shary Room in the University Library on the Edinburg campus.

Jean Braithwaite, an associate professor of creative writing, presented a Powerpoint presentation titled "Sneak Preview of Jean's groundbreaking research," during the fifth forum of the day on "Point of View in Comics."

150 students win awards at 58th annual RGV Regional Science and Engineering Fair

BROWNSVILLE – More than 700 middle and high school students from across South Texas participated in the 58th annual Rio Grande Valley Regional Science and Engineering Fair, hosted by The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley on Sat. Feb. 3.

Students competed in 17 science-related fields of study. The top three winners from each category, both senior and junior divisions, now advance to the Texas State Science and Engineering Fair in San Antonio in March.
