Summer Pell Grant FAQs
The U.S. Department of Education Appropriations Act, 2017, allows a student to receive Federal Pell Grant funds for up to 150% of the student’s Pell Grant Scheduled Award for an award year. A student may now receive full Federal Pell Grant funds for Summer 2025, even if they used the full amount during Fall and Spring.
To be eligible for the additional Pell Grant funds, the student must be eligible for Pell Grant funds, be meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress, and not have met or exceeded their Pell Lifetime Eligibility Used.
UTRGV Financial Aid Office will review student records to determine eligibility for a Summer Pell award. Summer awards will be based on full-time enrollment, and award amounts will be adjusted or cancelled once enrollment is confirmed and academic progress is reviewed. You will be notified by email once the Summer awards are complete, and you can review your award via your ASSIST account.
No, students do not need to reapply or submit another FAFSA. Summer Pell will be awarded based on the current year FAFSA information.
No, a Summer Notification form does not have to be submitted to receive Pell in the summer. The UTRGV Financial Aid Office will automatically identify the Pell-eligible students. However, to be considered for other Financial Aid awards, students are encouraged to submit the Summer Notification.
Pell Grant funds will be awarded for the maximum remaining eligibility for the Summer Session. The Pell award amount is split between Summer I and Summer II. To receive the full Pell award, you must enroll in 12 hours during the Summer Session; anything less will result in a prorated award.
- Example 1: A student being offered $1849 for Summer I and $1849 for Summer II, who enrolls 6 hours for Summer I and 6 hours for Summer II, would receive $1849 for Summer I and $1849 for Summer II.
- Example 2: A student being offered $1849 for Summer I and $1849 for Summer II, who enrolls 3 hours for Summer I and 3 hours for Summer II, would receive $925 for Summer I and $924 for Summer II.
