Cost of Attendance
The Cost of Attendance (COA) is an estimate of the typical student's cost to attend The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. COA includes estimated tuition and fees, as well as the average cost of basic living expenses such as housing, food, books, course materials, supplies, equipment, transportation, and miscellaneous personal expenses, for one full academic year (Fall & Spring terms). When comparing financial aid packages from other schools, make sure you are comparing the total cost of attending that school, not just the total financial aid offered.
Your COA is also used to create your financial aid package. Small changes to this estimate may or may not result in adjustments to aid, depending on Federal/State policies and regulations. UTRGV and other resources may provide financial aid up to your total COA, but will not provide financial aid exceeding that amount.
Enroll for 15 Hours
At UTRGV, there are several benefits to enrolling in at least 15 hours per semester:
- UTRGV's in-state tuition and fees cap at 12 hours per semester, which means any additional courses a student enrolls in after 12 hours are free (*see exclusions below).
- For example, if a student enrolls in 15 hours, the extra class is free. If a student enrolls in 18 hours, the two extra classes are free (view all Cost of Attendance components).
- An incoming freshman who started in Fall 2021 and takes 15 hours per semester (excluding summer school) saves more than $7,000 compared to a student taking 12 hours a semester, and graduates a full year earlier.
- According to Complete College America, students who enroll in 15 hours or more are much more likely to graduate on time than those enrolling in 12 hours or less.
- The report also states that students who enroll in 12 hours or less are more likely to drop out before graduating than those who enroll in 15 hours.
While we encourage all our students to enroll in 15 hours per semester, some benefits only apply to students paying in-state tuition. For any questions regarding your degree plan and/or course sequence, please speak to your academic advisor.
*Exclusions: books, course/lab fees, repeat/excessive hours tuition, out-of-state tuition, and accelerated online programs.
Definition of Terms
For residents of the Rio Grande Valley, being a commuter student has many benefits. Students who live in the RGV and commute to campus have even greater savings, as they do not incur room and board expenses for either on-campus or off-campus living. Additionally, there are numerous local public transportation options available for accessing the UTRGV campus.
For more information, go to UTRGV Transportation Services. The allowance for miscellaneous personal expenses includes clothing, laundry and cleaning, personal hygiene, and grooming supplies.
Please note: The amounts below for housing, food, books, course materials, supplies, equipment, transportation, and miscellaneous personal expenses are averages and will vary widely depending on the circumstances and needs of each student (e.g. place of residence, miles driven throughout the academic year, personal expenses, eating in a campus residence hall or cooking for oneself, etc.).
For all students who need to travel between the UTRGV campuses, UTRGV offers free, regularly scheduled shuttle service. Additionally, the local Metro bus lines allow UTRGV students to ride for free.
