Family Medicine Residency at Knapp Medical Center

SOM Knapp Medical Center Family Medicine Residents

Hello and Welcome,

It is my pleasure that you are interested in The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Family Medicine Residency Program at Knapp Medical Center.

Our program focuses on comprehensive family-oriented care for an underserved population in South Texas with an Evidence-based approach and guideline-driven oriented care for all of our patients, finding new ways to reach the needs of our population with the goal of balancing equity and equality and closing the gap of Social Determinants of Health that are prevalent in our community.

Our community is a multicultural and binational population with over 2.6 million residents combined between US and Mexico cities across our shared border.

Our residency is designed to emphasize the family medicine continuity setting to care for populations in varying systems, from the Outpatient clinic to the ER, to the Inpatient setting as well as Subacute care facilities associated with our program. Through this appropriate blend of supervised patient care experiences, clinical teaching, and didactic activities, you will receive the tools to practice in any setting in our state of Texas and the US.

We provide team-based, collaborative, integrated (interprofessional) health care and education to meet the goals of the healthcare system of the future, partnering with our in-house team of Clinical Pharmacologist, Behavioral Scientists, Social Workers, and Billing department.

Our program also takes advantage of the vast array of in-depth expertise and rich resources of the university setting for intensive, focused experiences in other specialties when appropriate.

Lastly, our partnership with Knapp Medical Center provides the best experience for a full-spectrum family medicine experience.

Thanks for visiting, and again, welcome.

Gerardo Munoz-Monaco, MD, MBA, DABFM, FAAFP
Program Director
